Would you believe I've never ever once in my life seen borax? Heard of it a million times, never seen it. I'll look for it.Wombat wrote:Borax and icing sugar for the ants?

Quickly though: will it harm my dogs? The same area the ants are most abundant is the same area my dogs sleep at night. It's terrible because I'm sure they get bitten a lot and I'd like to fix that so they can still be outside and I can start enjoying my backyard more!

vinegar and or boiling water also work for ants

Re: Improving your Ish in 2010
I was thinking about this deeply and I don't think perhaps we have the same types of ants in our respective countries. Because it would take a LOT (tubful?) of boiling water to get rid of a mere fraction of these ants. Not only do they crawl over the ENTIRE yard, their nests are in trees. http://dianakupke.id.au/Greenant.jpg As it is, I don't know WHERE it is, either. I don't have any trees. :/indy wrote:vinegar and or boiling water also work for ants
Also, vinegar doesn't, they're this big:

I've actually seen them build boats out of leaves to cross little puddle of water from rain.
Aside, how cool is that ant image?
I mean, you use sugar to attract the ants and they bring the borax back to their nest and kill the queen, right? Would this kill my dogs though? :/ 'cause there's tons of them.
Sorry to be argumentitive.

Re: Improving your Ish in 2010
I think that this year I have to do more in the garden. We bought a greenhouse but the weather was so bad that it's only half erected
So I guess that's the first job. After that I want to be more active in the vegie growing department. At the moment we have our food delivered from a place that supplies from local producers and fair trade etc, but it would be nice to buy less veg from them. I also want to take better care of our finanaces. They aren't a problem and quite honestly becoming ish has done them the world of good - it really can help you to pay off your debts! I just want to be a bit more aware of whats going on with them and save a bit where we can. Then it's learning to crochet and get over my fear of the sewing machine!
Oh and I think I have to learn to make less jam and chutney - 1 1/2 cupboardfulls may be a tad too much! lol!

What's the green thing sticking up from its front bit?
I ate green ants' abdomens when I was in Aus, amazing how citrusy they are - apparently they are full of Vit C and the aborigines eat them. You could try eating them all Elizabeth.
Failing that are anteaters indigenous in Australia?

Borax is somewhat toxic, but if you put it inot something that the ants can get into that the dogs can't it would be OK - a tin or jar with holes punched in it perhaps?ElizabethBinary wrote:Would you believe I've never ever once in my life seen borax? You two have confused me first thing this morning! With the talk of ant burritos I read echidnas as enchilladas!
More coffee needed I think!

Re: Improving your Ish in 2010
I'm hoping to set up a project for the West Midlands LGBT community creating awareness of green issues. So far so good as I have managed to get on board the assistance of a very helpful ally in Rev Chris Dowd (t'is a strange concept that the leaders of the Christian & Pagan groups get on but we do). I do have plans on what I want to do, what events & workshops I want to put on but have to see how it goes. Watch this space I shall update as the plans evolve.

Re: Improving your Ish in 2010
I don't see why pagans and christians can't get along as leaders but I'm amazed you're able to have a large enough community for LGBT, Pagan AND green awareness. Heck, just trying for LGBT in this area I found a whopping once a month party and a lesbian tennis night. I bet if I tried for Pagan and LGBT, the Venn diagram of that wouldn't even touch. I'm impressed, though. I hope to read more.sleepyowl wrote:I'm hoping to set up a project for the West Midlands LGBT community creating awareness of green issues. Re: Improving your Ish in 2010
Looking at the weather, one of my ish improvements for 2010 should include getting a camping stove. No power cuts so far but if there are - I have a problem. No - can't do wood or coal here as it's council/social housing property so I'd better do something about it.
