propogating blackcurrants

Post: # 236702Post JeremyinCzechRep »

It does seem that many people are getting good crops of blackcurrants this year. I was tidying up in my back yard. pulling up weeds from between the paving stones, when I noticed that I had pulled up two small blackcurrant plants, both about 5cm high. The blackcurrants had fallen from a bush a few metres up behind a wall and successfully germinated. I potted both of them immediately and watered them - 2 days later one seems to be doing well, the other one has probably gone to the big garden in the sky. Does anyone have experience of growing blackcurrants from seed? Is it likely to grow into a wonderful bush like its 'mother'? Or would I be better off taking cuttings from 'mum'? (Something else I've never tried) or perhaps just buying more from the local garden centre.

Generally its quicker and easier from cuttings ( try it, it's easy, take 60cm cuttings, plant then on a 45 degree angle 1/3 under ground)

There is all kinds of stuff about seeds and polination and not being like Mum, but as it's in a pot, give it a whirl, Shirl.

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

Thanks for the tip, Bob. What's the best season to try it? On a separate blackcurrant issue - I have just made the most delicious blackcurrant jam the world has ever seen. I would like to give some to my mum and niece who are flying out to visit me - but they're only flying with hand luggage. I have some pots smaller than 100ml and some larger. Does anyone have any experience of taking pots of jam through airport security? Is jam a liquid? Not mine, it set very nicely - but I'm not sure if some guy on security will see it in that way. He could also describe any glass jar as a potential weapon so could confiscate it. Anyone with good or bad news to share?
