Have anybody else's courgette being growing wierdly

Post: # 275902Post sleepyowl »

I'm now 1 of 3 people I know who seems to be having weird courgette growth this year, mine are giant yellow ball shaped things when they should be long thin & green, another friend has them dying before they are getting anything like a size that is worth harvesting & another is having her's grow fat looking like marrows before they are long enough to harvest. Is it just a midlands thing?

Any chance your seeds have been mislabeled? just a thought as they sound like a normal variety of courgette. grew some once :)

as for the ones dying off. I had that once. small fruits with flowers and they kept 'falling off'. someone said try hand pollinating. following year I had no issues.

Hi, I have had some problems with slugs(see other post) and where the slugs have nibbled the end of some young fruits they no longer grow lengthwise but start to balloon outwards. This has only happened to the first ones nearest the ground, and they are all green not yellow. Maybe some mistake has been made somewhere in the seed packaging?

I've got the usual sort - straight and green and some round ones, summer squash I think they were called but they're just like courgettes in taste - which I'm picking when they're just a bit bigger than a cricket ball. Some were hiding and they've grown to half the size of a football and those I've chopped up and given to the hens who love them.

Mine have been growing weirdly. Many not developing further than tiny (then yellowing) and some making a bottle shape. Also the plants are already deteriorating fast and I have not had even 1/4 of my normal yield in 'proper' courgettes.

I have used bought compost, but my potatos and tomatoes have been (and are) just fine.

So I think it is the strange weather we had this spring, rather than anything in the soil...

it seems like Jandra & I have the same problem, I haven't used any manure on them so I know it is not that & I have grown round courgettes before & they weren't behaving like that

mine have been going from thin 4-inch traditional courgettes to 3kg zeppelins in 3-4 days. And I don't even like them, although they are ok/inoffensive grated, salted and wrung out into a spanish omelette!
