Happy New Year!
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year !!
Just the news that someone has grown a single tomato plant still humbles me, still awes me. Grateful to be in the presence of those that are carrying a flame that will reignite something bigger in the future. i suspect it won't be in 2015 but it will happen . I raise my glass to you all!!

Re: Happy New Year!
I just bought my new years present to myself, 53 euros worth of seed potatoes, been setting loads of Daubentons Kale cuttings today and getting excited about my new idea for growing soil free micro salads in my shed, got a seed catalogue. So I will say to you all hope you have a self sufficientish year,

By my reckoning that must be about 18 Kg of spuds, EIGHTEEN KILOSdiggernotdreamer wrote:I just bought my new years present to myself, 53 euros worth of seed potatoes,
That's about 220 individual seed potatoes
Even with your "no dig" method, that's 220 bendings down
Well, don't come running to me when your back seizes up.

And there we were, debating whether we had room to plant 60.

Re: Happy New Year!
Happy New Year OD and GA. Thank goodness I am hopeless at maths, I would never have calculated that in a squillion years (is there such a thing as a squillion). Now you made me look at my order, phew it's only 12kg of seed potatoes ............. oh wait now, those are my new seeds for this year, there is also my saved seed so that is another 6 varieties, so maybe I am going to kiss the ground 300 times.............. ok so my sort of resolution (sashaying round the place) is now shot to pieces on the first day............ may have to start ANOTHER bed to put spuds in...................... off to lie down, cold flannel etc

So am I.diggernotdreamer wrote:Thank goodness I am hopeless at maths, I would never have calculated that in a squillion years
But I do note down in my gardening diary how many potatoes there are in a bought bag, then I can calculate how much ground I need to get ready. Then the maths becomes easy, there are about 27 potatoes to an average bag and earlies need to be a foot apart, so a 27 foot row.
Maincrops need foot and a half, so that 2.25Kg bag of 27 needs about 40' (had to use a calculator for that one )
EDIT: 300 potatoes, 450 feet ?? (getting on for a 10th of a mile )
