Intelligent plants?

Post: # 291199Post Odsox »

I posted a thread on here a while ago about my sweetcorn all flowering at the same time regardless of their maturity.

I've also read about a single tree in a forest being attacked by pests and all the rest of the trees suddenly start producing their own version of insecticide, but I think my climbing French beans are aware of their surroundings.

I put strings up for my beans a few days ago and I swear I haven't "twiddled" them by hand, but they are nearly all climbing the strings now, even though the strings are a good 3 inches away.
You can see that the beans have, what looks like, headed 90 degrees from upright to get to the string.

I'll have to ask them nicely to put their own strings up next year.

Cucumbers usually manage to confer as to whether to grow or die each year. And my runner beans usually manage to avoid the bean poles no matter what instructions I follow without a lot of persuasion.

Communication between plants is becoming well documented. I have seen time lapse video of invasive climbers showing them waving the tendrils around until they contact a suitable support.

So basically the plants are taking over and running the show. Probably about time.

If I remember correctly, Triffids were grown for their oil. I don't remember whether they produced edible oil or mineral type oil, but either way well worth growing.
I wonder where you can get seeds?

Anywhere in Britain except the Isle of Wight if I remember the book correctly. Don't forget to top 'em early.

Beans do the same, and always in the same direction iirc. Can't remember whether it's clockwise or anticlockwise.
