Another patch I started on on Sunday last; even worse than the previous. As this part is being planted to trees this winter I will have to work it up finer. Too much air space and therefore poor root/soil contact means the trees will die over the summer even if I water them. Tape is at 500mm

Re: Compost worms
It doesn't look very well, doeses it! Are there any live worms in it?
Lots of muck, compost and leaf mould will bring it round but I don't envy you trying to break some of those clumps up - they look like small boulders. Oh and some mycelium for the trees - it looks so dead they could do with some ready installed phone lines so they know they're not alone.

Re: Compost worms
Its a catch 22 Flo - Rain would be great but I need to prepare the site well before the tree planting to get the rip lines stable for the babies. If not enough rain then the planting will have to be delayed a year; I don't fancy watering 3,000 trees and shrubs over summer.
The site already has a number of old remnant trees so the comms lines should be there. Strangely the soil tests show an "average" level of soil organic matter. If I can get them over the first 2 years then all should be good.
