Malvern show

Post: # 293098Post old tree man »

Over the weekend Jane and i spent some time with my sister in Herefordshire and visited the Malvern show what a lovely relaxing weekend it was, we spent most of the time looking at the artisan stalls very nice but expensive  mind you we tend to look at what people are making then get home and make it ourselves, We treated ourselves to some spring bulbs some tulips and crown imperials.
I learnt something as well i bought some special tea and while i was talking to the young lady about teas i found out that they put small amounts of plastic in tea bags  i have to admit i never new that fortunately i only use tea leaves, but wow is there no product that they put plastic in no wonder the planet is in such a state !!!!

Yes they definitely put plastic in some teabags.
I didn't know either until fairly recently and as I always compost teabags it dawned on me that I kept seeing the skeletonised mesh parts in my soil.
You can get plastic free ones and that's what we use now.

Yes, the things they put plastic in beggars belief. I usually think they must do these things to save money/boost profits but I'll admit it's sometimes difficult to work out how! I've just mentioned, on another thread, that I'm finding it increasingly difficult to get tinned catfood. Pre-portioned, plastic sachets are taking up more and more shelf space in the supermarket. Non-recyclable plastic, I think.

Anyway, you had a good weekend and learned something new. I'd call that a result.

I wish we could go back to the days when you could buy just what you wanted instead of pre packed stuff!! problem is all the mega super markets have caused the closure of most of the high streets and the small time shop owners, it does get me angry.

They've undercut the price and quality of most things so that when the real thing comes along it seems ridiculously expensive - even though that's probably a price that will give someone a reasonable income.

They can be recycled, but so far not many places do it. I am collecting my sachets now (cat refuses to eat out of the same tin more than once, so it has to be sachets), and also for a friend, and then I'll have to find a way to take them (in suitcase and rucksack, and by bus) to the one address in Aberdeen that I know of... But the more people do make the effort, the more likely it is that more places will take them in.

PS - the link for recycling:

That looks interesting. Might be worth a talk with locals - our nearest collection point is Inverness!

I've no idea how they get from the collecting points to the recycling plant. I think the main problem with collecting points is that somebody has to have the space and time to deal with it.

I seriously doubt anyone would want to collect from up here. Unless they had a few to collect anyway. Still, it might be worth looking into.

Heaps of things with plastic in them that could other wise be recycled or composted (recyclable Vs able to be recycled) Basically anything made out of paper that needs to hold a liquid or withstand immersion

Long life milk cartons are now refused as a part of cardboard recycling in our area due to the lining inside, you need a degree in waste management these days just to try your best and do your bit !!!!!!!!

Absolutely. Plus our council has given us one of the small wheelie bins for plastics and tins, but then they decided we should put cardboard in the same bin - they must think these bins are the Tardis!

I know Maggie it troubles me all the recycling that councils are supposed to do, i was watching our local news and the journalist discovered that our recycling in part is sent to Turkey and the far east, so how can that be environmentally viable !!!!, we try so hard at our level of recycling only to find out that it goes abroad or is just dumped this is so worrying for our children and grandchildren.
