Hiya there! I grew in Argentina, and I remember during my childhood and early teens almost everything we needed was grown at home (I was raised in the country). We had this big dark, cool room where you could see sacks of potatos and onions, hams and salami hanging from canes in the ceiling, shelves with cheese, barrels with sauerkraut (you guessed it we are German!) and so on. Every Saturday the women will bake bread and cakes for the week in this long wood oven.

I now live in Wales, and just got an allotment. Although I am not planning to grow just everything as in my childhood, I will try to get as much as my strength and the plot allows. Obviously I will not be able to grow cows, cuz they do not allow them in my allotment, neither they let me bring in chicken so I would have to do with eggplants.

I am planning on getting a chest freezer to store stuff. I know how to can and tin things, but I feel more like baggin n freezin things as it would be easier. So, I will keep you update of my progress.

I am already seedling in my shed at home different tomatoes and other plants. I will plant some "fancy" tomatoes in my back yard and in the allotment will grow the "sauce" varieties mostly. Also will try some rows of potatoes, and cabb/cauli/broc/sprouts. I have a long list of stuff that I will try this first year, and depending on how it goes, next year will stick to what did well.

I just got a second allotment wich I will use only for squashes, zucchini, melons, and other trailing fruits, and will reserve the other one for the rest of plants.

Well this is basically my allotment story for now.

Hugs

Good luck with all the growing stuff - I saw there was some useful-looking anti-slug stuff on the main Self Sufficientish site.
