Doba Dan From Slovenia!
Doba Dan From Slovenia!
Hello Forum. The winter is over.... Slovenia is truly beautiful this time of the year. The blossom is on the trees, the bulbs are up and the gardens and vine yards are packed with people coming out of hibernation with warm glows on their faces (mainly caused by the new wine that’s now perfect to drink.)
Our wine (third year now) is excellent. In fact had some American tourists stayed at our holiday cottage a couple of weeks ago that said it was the best wine they had ever drunk!
I on the other hand had a friend over last week, had one too many and fell down the stairs, into a door with my chin! Nasty bruise the next day and it bloody hurt, it’s like rocket fuel!
Going to get to grips with the vegetables this year, which is hard with three kids as nothing ever gets to finish growing before they pick it. Thinking of an electric fence? Don’t suppose there is anything on the market that’s more kid friendly? I guess after a few shocks they’ll learn in the end!
The problem here is that all our neighbours are older and retired and have much more time to spend in their gardens so a continuous supply of fruit and vegetables comes all year round.
In fact the neighbour has just been round with a new bottle of pumpkin oil (which I believe is excellent for the prostrate).
Had a great walk on Easter Monday with the village. The walk was supposed to be an hour and a half but took 4 and a half. Kept getting stopped at different people’s houses and made to drink some kind of home brew. Some with berries in, some brandy, some snaps.
The highlight of the walk was a stop of at a farm that had just killed the pig. They prepare the meat outside, cutting it into the various joints. To celebrate they cook up a few pieces with garlic and wash it down with wine. The woman are supposed to ride the dead pig for fertility reasons so I quickly walked in the other direction as 3 kids are quite enough for now.
For anyone looking to get out of the rat race into the countryside and somewhere that’s much more affordable, I have just posted details in the ‘for sale’ section of this forum of a farmhouse with outbuildings that is for sale in a lovely farming village. A snip at 34000 pounds. Great garden, plenty of space for growing, planting and keeping a few birds.
Till the next time!

Hey Lousam,
Doberdan!
I've been to Slovenia when I was 16 and I loved it there. I'm sure much has changed, but my husband and I are looking to go to Slovenia for vacation early July. We hope to enjoy the karst mountains and the Julisk Alps. Also back then I hiked for a few days along the Kupa/Kolpa (depending on whether you're on the Croat or Sovenic side of this border river) and I wouldn't mind seeing that region again. It was very rural back then. Lot's of homemade wines, indeed.
What part of the country are you in?
Regards, Jandra
