We had a wind up radio - it did wind you up when it ran out of charge in the middle of a good programme!! In the end the winder fell off!

Now we have a DAB radio - haven't seen one of those with a winder - and this is obviously plug in, although we do used rechargeable batteries too.

My mum has a wind up radio with a solar bit on it, so you don't have to keep winding it up all the time! Have you seen them?

can't say that I have seen them shiney, good idea though!

Nev - yep could be a further study on Dave!

I have found a wind up DAB radio along with some water powered stuff http://www.ogormans.co.uk/windup.htm

Also found another wind up radio that doubles as a wind up mobile charger

:banghead:

This is going to be a much used emoticon!

I wish I could do something about leaving things on at work... For myself, I often bang my shins (and other bodyparts) because I walk through the house in the dark. And my fridge has been off for weeks because it's cold enough anyway. If it wasn't for the goats in the garden I would just keep the stuff in a box outside the backdoor; as it is, I keep it in the guestroom with the window open. (No guests at the moment, as you can guess  !)

But at work, I'd love to get other folks to join me in trying to save electricity... The computer stays on most of the day, which is ok, as several people use it - you might just have switched it off, and somebody else comes in to check their e-mail. It goes into hibernation pretty quickly, anyway.

But lights :banghead:! My boss comes in in the morning, switches on the light in his office and the changing room, and then leaves and sometimes doesn't return for hours. I go in and switch on the two low watt lamps in the corridor and switch off his lights, as I think if anybody else comes in (it's kind of a public building), they'd prefer to see the entrance rather than full light in one far off office!

Last week we were very busy with many outsiders working here for a few days. I always had to make sure to be the last to leave the building after coffee breaks or in the afternoon, because nobody would switch off the lights, nobody will shut the outside door (despite a polite sign asking them to do so - and it's b***y freezing outside), and they turn the heating up to full, which will only come into effect after they've left anyway. I have more or less "trained" them to separate their rubbish, but energy efficiency is still a long way off...

I'd love them to tidy up their lot in the huge freezers that we are having to run (two walk-ins); if everybody threw out what they don't need any more, we could turn one of them off and save loads of energy.

On the other hand, the farm manager insists on having all the lights off in the cattle and sheep sheds at the weekend, because "nobody is about" - i.e. no humans are about. In my opinion animals have a right not to live in perpetual darkness, too - even at the weekend. I always leave on a few lights during the day, usually just the emergency lighting. But then, I often think that he's only interested in the financial side of things, not in animal welfare. But there's better ways of saving money on electricity - see above.

Sorry - rant over.
