Now if you have one of those dehumidifier things, not an electric one but those cheapy plastic ones where you put something which is the equivalent of silica gel in the top and the pot underneath fills up slowly with water (sorry I am not very technical with my wording ) - is that plain distilled water too, or not?

In theory yes, but although silica gel is inert it almost certainly contains dust, which will mix with the water, so probably not suitable for a steam iron.

Can grey water at least be "cleaned up" a bit, like through filtration or some other process so it can be used for flushing toilets or urinals and not get the porcelain dirty or smelly?
