Take a tip from the Irish (who know a thing or two about drying washing in the rain), put a washing line in the barn or garage or anywhere outside but under a roof.
In our case a polytunnel or a greenhouse that's probably empty all winter would be ideal.

Honestly, what next? Better not use a steam iron either then, that puts pints of water into the air. .

No she won't have it, I told her it was for her own good, but no, she just will not iron outside, we have a power point and everything!

I use a dehumidifier. I've no idea how much it costs to run compared to a tumble dryer, I think they're supposed to be cheaper. They're also supposed to warm the air (although I suspect that's just by removing the moisture) but a couple of winters ago, when my boiler gave up, it was the only heating in the laundry room and you could feel that it was slightly warmer than the kitchen.

The other good point about them is that you can use the water for your plants, just don't put the plants in the same room as the dehumidifier.

Drying clothes in front of a log fire is good as well. The fire will draw the moist air through and out via the chimney.
