an original cast iron victorian fireplace which was reinstated in my last house (early victorian date) in the living room and was wonderful to sit around to get warm in the winter!

the fire surround was recycled to - planks from old church pews found in a flooded barn, and the hearth was recycled old thick slate tiles from the collapsed roof of an old farm building

I pulled a bike out of a neighbours rubbish yesterday even if we can't fix it up I thought it would be good for spares...

the plant pots i'm using at the moment came out of a neighbours skip!

-Our washing machine (there was just a hairpin stuck in the pump)
-My bike
-Four matching cane chairs
-Pots galore
-The best kettle I've ever had (and I was about to go and buy one cos the oh had dropped our enamelled one and chipped it the day before)
-A bottle of aged Benedictine (mmmm skip liquor )
-Some VERY expensive bed linen
-Old terracotta tesselated tiles (lots)
-Stereo
-Tent (only missing pegs and storage bag)

When I used to take stuff to the local dump, I used to watch the cars parking next to me to see if they had anything I wanted! I could hardly drag myself away!

I got a really good suitcase - perfect apart from the wheels didn't work properly, so it didn't pull along (like, I've got a husband for carrying heavy things!)

Green mesh fencing

Dog bed (at the time I didn't have any dogs, but I was hopeful, now the cat sleeps in it during the winter).

Loads of terracota pots

Vidal Sasoon hairdryer.. .my friend threw it away .. I said, I'll put a new fuse in it for you .. she said no, take it away ... new fuse and it worked perfectly.


I was always horrified at the things people threw away ... great job, working at the dump, apart from the smell.

Bugger! I saw a pair of trough-style planters in a skip on the way to the shops but forgot and came back a different way! I hope they're still there tomorrow! They even had soil and (dead) plants in them, which'd be great for the compost bin!

technically you should get permission... meh.

From a skip? Really? I thought you could just take stuff..oops!

Heh...that is, to take stuff from a skip. I didn't think you meant ask the skip's permission...honestly!

...there's a library dumpster I frequent

i cant believe a library throws books away!! thats insane.

i just got a washing basket out of a bin the other day, and also got a clothes rack to hang my washing on! so im doing well. also, at glastonbury quite a few people left stuff so we ended up with heaps of cans of soup, a big bag of pasta and a load of snack pots (kind of like pot noodles but a bit less icky) which will do my husband great for when he's at work.

First monday of every month, they throw out boxes full of books. It's terrible that they do it but it works out wonderfully for me.

yeah part of me wishes my local library would do that so i could get free books (although i'd end up taking the lot and not having room in my house to breathe) but then again yes it is terrible they do that. well done for you for rescuing some of them though!
