The best way of getting car drivers to understand is to get them out and about on two wheels.
As motorcyclsts, Rob and I are infinitely more aware of vulnerable road users than our non-cycling friends. What's even more amusing

is that when you have the road safety discussion with non-cyclists they'll often say "oh I'll look out for (motor)cyclists more" - They're aware that they're not fully alert!
As compulsory road training - pedal cycling from a young age, motorcycle when you want an engine and car when you have road experience and awareness, that would sort it.

Mr. QB and I wear a yellow reflective band (about 2 inches wide) on our right ankles. When I ride behind him and a car with its lights on comes up behind me the reflective band is brighter then his lights. It also appears to flash because as his foot rises and falls the band comes in and out of the beam of the headlights. I'd highly recomend them, especially as they don't have batteries to run out. We got ours free from the cycle safety group of Hampshire County Council but if you were buying they couldn't cost more then a couple of pounds.

Well, this is most of the new look funded by donations from lots of people...
That's the low light during the day pics. Night pics to follow. I still have reflectors and tape to add to the bike, need to swap the gloves for a smaller pair. and add LED ankle reflectors (similar to QuakerBear's but with yellow LEDs as well as the reflective band).
I think it will be hard to claim I'm not sufficiently visible now!
Thanks to all who have helped. Full details of what we've bought to follow once everything has arrived and been installed.

I'd go for reindeer antlers. Blinking ones, of course. And a few bits of tinsel streaming out behind you...
Stoney, watch out - I bet some idiot will phone the police soon and complain that you are a traffic hazard with all those lights!
