MrsF, and there I was thinking you wuz married to Mr Flibble.....
I have the Jamie At Home cookbook, a wee present from Father Christmas it was. And it is very, very good indeed. And there are some really good tips for growing your own stuff. Most of it I'm sure you'll know already, but as I'm a beginner to growing anything other than herbs it has been quite useful and it's written for numpties, which suits me! Good list of organic suppliers of seeds/plants in the back, too.
Only thing that got to me...it's not really Jamie's garden, is it? It's on Jamie's land, but it's Brian's garden. He's the one that does all the bloody work. Jamie just picks things and says 'Ooooh, pukka!'. Thing is, I have read the 'Thanks' bit of his book several times, and can't see a thank you to Brian anywhere. I wonder if they've fallen out or something.

I took my dog to play frisbee. She was useless. I think I need a flatter dog.

I reckon Brian could make a really interesting spin-off series....
They're not weeds - that's a habitat for wildlife, don't you know?

Welcome to TVland. Hugh didn't really live at River cottage either. I don't think that any of this should detract for the useful information that you can glean from such shows nor the inspiration that so many find from them. You just have to take many of the realities that TVland creates for you with a pinch of salt.

Contadina, I only found that out about Hugh recently (big Hugh fan!) and war very disappointed, I felt like I had been cheated. He made it look like he was this single bloke, man against the work, fighting the system, and really making a home for himself, turned out in "beyond river cottage" that he had a wife and two sons age 5 and 3!! I was very upset!

TV cooks and gardening.
Well! I am surprised that anybody believed that TV cooks actually soiled their hands in the garden. Nah you are kidding.
I will say in the Essex boy’s defence that I actual believe that he might be trying to propel the camera shy Brian into fame and fortune. I reckon Brian might have his own show sometime, given the opportunity!
Hugh Wittingsall. Well off bloke surrounded by accountants.
PS can't get spellcheck to function. Badly in need.

Berti, you can blame Channel 4.....as you can with Jamie getting over-enthusiastic about his (pretty rubbish, to be honest) Flavour Shaker....Trishy, you didn't dream it - it is true. Mr Oliver now has very red knuckles after a severe rapping.

I have watched both HFW and JO series, HFW from "Cook on the Wild Side". Recently I began to get a bit annoyed with him, as he can come over as rather sanctimonious, and I began to think "You have had it easy with a sort of famous mum, and a ready made career as a food writer, following his sacking, he has his cash, as I am sure he wasn't ever really living on a knife edge, and he seemed to be surrounded by some very useful types, and his "local" growing and buying seemed to cover several more miles than my idea of local is." (Big thought).
And when he says "You can all do what I'm doing" I think no I can't - I am not being paid to research local producers, or to grow stuff or to spend a day making ice lollies or sandcastles." I bet if Stonehead were to spend a day on the beach catching herrings his wife NO Doubt would have done all the jobs for him
But, he is entertaining, he shows you what is out there and what could be possible.
JOlliver, I have his book (Xmas), and I think he says in it somewhere that the land is for growing veg on for one of his restaurants??? But it seems so removed form his moped riding wide boy isms, and a bit phoney. Like he has made his packet so orf he goes to the country. It made me laugh the game episode when we were told "Anyone can do it" and all these chaps are sitting there in Harris, Joules and Barbour. No adidas.
Again it is entertainment and shows you possibilities (if you can get past the Daivd Bellamy-esque bootiful bit of chicken type nonsense)
