Believe me they can. As a kid I used to think that all sorts of things she did was just normal, I had it drummed into me from an early age that family business is just that, you dont talk about it outside of the family. It wasn't till I got older and eventually sort help for depression, that the shrink was astounded at what I considered "normal" . It was a learning experience for me. So although I do think 2 years sitting on the loo is, well odd, depending on her history I can quite well understand why she might consider it normal, she probably had lost all self esteem and thought it was her lot in life.
