101 tips to help save the environment

101 Uses For is popular and let's hope it stays that way. Our second book is presently called 101 tips for self sufficiency; we will certainly dip into this section for ideas. So post away and let's try and get at least one thread up to 101.

Walk, when and where ever you can.
During the winter keep your blinds/shades open to receive as much sunlight/heat as possible, during the summer keep them closed to eliminate as much sunlight/heat as possible.

Re "die" I heard on the radio (was it Sunday on BBC Radio 4) about the alternatives to cremation and wooden coffin burials. http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/programme ... ails.shtml
"Green burials" The item should be available to listen again (upto Saturday I think).

67. (by my reckoning) stop buying tissues & instead liberate some of the cotton hankies that Mum still has stuffed in a drawer somewhere.

Okay, maybe a bit personal, but it worked for me.

Come on, we must be able to get to 101 on this.

For Britain - reverse  : In winter, keep your blinds closed, to keep the heat in (it's dark all day anyway!); in summer, keep them open, to make the most of the sunlight (it'll never get too hot).

any objections?

Post: # 30843Post Tracey Smith »

Hi all - does anyone have any objections to me pulling a top ten list together from this thread and reading it out on the radio? I have a little green show on my local hospital radio at Taunton.

I want to plug www.SelfSufficientish.com and the 101 ways threads would make a smashing regular feature.

Ta x

101 tips to help save the environment

Post: # 30847Post kenboak »

Some great Ideas Here,

Can someone who's good at editing these posts, put them all in a long list document with check boxes, so we can all tick off the ones we do.

We can use it as a "Ish R Us" guide - a checklist for eco-living.

I know this is a blatant rip-off of someone else's idea, but it works. If I can spell his name - I'd credit him (Donnachadh McCarthy)

Here's one of mine:

Spend a week living an alternative lifestyle at home or in your garden, instead of going on holiday abroad. See how eco-frugal you can be. Spend the week doing the things on the above mentioned list if you are short of ideas! Deny Easy-Jet their airfare!

Live in a tent or shed
Cook on a barbeque using sustainable English charcoal - and no lighter fluid
Eat your own veg
Piss on your compost heap
Improvise a solar water heater
Finish the latest keg of home brew
Keep happy - despite dubious British weather

Ha - holiday abroad? What's that then??!

Sustainable english charcoal... I read a fascinating article about this recently and was all fired up to get some (pardon the pun) but then found it's only sold at a few outlets down south - although I do seem to recall seeing some up here about 6 years ago (was I dreaming?)

We are going camping this weekend on holiday (as opposed to going abroad) and are taking some of our veg with us to cook on the BBQ...

With regards to "toileting" on the compost heap - we do this anyway! It saves trekking inside and taking boots off etc to go to the loo....

No 69? Encourage your workplace to recycle (if it doesn't already)
1) by using the little cups you get with water machines as containers for planting seeds
2) recycling toner/ink cartridges
3) duplex printing (lots of people DON'T do this)

If you can't pee outside in the compost, pee in the shower. If you have to use the toilet, use a clean, old cut up t-shirt instead of toilet paper. Throw in laundry after use.

Lost count completely - but thought I resurrect this old post so......

what ever number was reached) Use a pressure cooker - cooks all the dinner in a fraction of the time with much less water. Also makes great soup and is big enough for a jam pan too!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free

It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

I posted this earlier, however in the wrong place :(.

#? ) Change your internet settings to view pages in Black and White settings. Black background with white text.

Deselect "Allow websites to choose colors themselves.

While this looks a little more drab than other colors, you'll save watt after watt of power.
