what are you harvesting?

I've finished doing all my currants at long last (phew!) and they totalled 9kg. All in the freezer now awaiting being turned into cordial/jelly/coulis/ice cream/whatever. It's worth it in the end as they are so versatile.

And I picked my first teeny weeny cherry tomato yesterday, although it didn't really have a lot of flavour, but there are others ripening! And had my first beetroot. And my umpteenth barbecue....there are some benefits to this weather!

Ha ha I've just composted about 8 courgettes I've picked in the last week! Why do I bother growing them? I really only want about one a week.... No that's not true I turn them into lovely courgette, basil and parmesan soup but I still have tons of last year's soup in the freezer and no time for soup making until we start getting some regular rain!

First French beans last night - lovely!

Ohhhhh nooooooo turnips!

Had my first red onion and it was lovely.

Remontant strawbs just ripening up now, just about the right time for when the rasps finish. So I go from early strawbs to rasps to later strawbs and then to autumn rasps. Life ain't bad. Ooops sorry Susie!

I'm growing those melon flavoured turnips this year, only they go as soon as they are big enough to eat.
OH who hates radishes, eats them raw wholesale in her packed salad lunch when they are about golf ball sized.

Intrigued by melon-flavoured turnips as I love all things swedey/turnipy! What are they called/variety Odsox?

Had first three yellow cherry toms with my lunch today along with last little gem lettuce - rest of the row has bolted - and a red spring onion. French beans and courgettes yesterday.

Still can't get the fork into the ground to dig up the new spuds. The ground is iron-hard under the membrane - would have to chisel them out! Raining today so hopefully Charlottes tomorrow.

I was allowed a small taster of the first one harvested and they are indeed very sweet and melon(ish).
They also have a double flavour as although the flesh is sweet, the skin is quite hot like a radish, so peel it .. or not, but most definitely have to be eaten raw, or only very lightly stir fried.

I just harvested some garlic. I'll harvest the rest in a couple days. Going to be hot here. Expected to be 90f today.

My garlic and shallots have dried out in record time this year in our metal hangar (barn) - whatever the temp outside it's +5C in there so it's been well over 30C every day.

Ohhhhh nooooooo turnips!

I hated turnips till my allotment neighbour gave me a few spare seedlings that he thinks are called 'Veitchy red' though as I can't find them on the web as a variety, I'll have to nag him to look at the packet.

These have been tender and peppery even when they've reached a good size and I've cooked the tops, holes and all, along with my chard and beet leaves. Delicious and tender enough to eat raw as well as cooked (the turnips, not the leaves which are old boots).

Ah well might have to try, after all I am working my way through all my 'hated from childhood' veggies and finding most are actually not bad at all - particularly broad beans!

Great rejoicing here - finally managed to dig up some Charlotte spuds today.

The ground had been baked hard by the sun and until today, could hardly get a fork into the soil.

New spuds, boiled, buttered and minted. Yum.
