An idea for amusing a child of any age...

DD's teacher recommend she try to improve her handwriting a bit (she's only six!), so with a view to that I've suggested DD keeps a holiday diary. We've had mixed success so far but the idea is she writes about the day's activities and draws a picture. Trouble is she's chosen to do it when she's too tired and she's a perfectionist so she sits amidst a heap of scrumpled paper >sigh< She likes the idea though and we have another six weeks to get it right!
If you have a visiting child, esp if they're from abroad, you could do a visit scrapbook. I bought DD a half-price lined A4 notebook and some pens in Woollies, which i think made the whole thing more attractive.
Another idea is making a family tree on a giant piece (or several giant pieces) of paper, using either the children's own drawings of each family member or if you have the technology printed out photos. It's a nice way of thinking about rellies you don't see often.
