Anyone out there live near a decent wool shop?

Post: # 135855Post JulieSherris »

OK, I've scoured the web & looked on Golden Pages for wool shops in Ireland - and the 'trend' for knitting just isn't high on anyone's list here :?
We DO have a wool shop in Galway, but when I went in, it was a craft shop, with one rack of yarns geared to 4 or 5 specialised pattern books.....

I used to live 2 minutes away from a little wool shop, but am reluctant to phone the lady who runs the place, mainly because she's deaf as a bat! I'd ask my youngest daughter, but she's hopeless & I'd probably get single balls of funky psychedelic yarns & patterns for hobo type woollies.....

So, I need to ask a BIG favour & if anyone out there has anywhere near to them, would they get me some patterns & wool if I send the funds over to cover & for P & P?
I'd send a little list of requirements - nothing too fussy - but I'd be ever so grateful..... :hugish: and you'd be my best friend for life...... promise

Sorry honey - I'm nowhere near a wool shop (or anywhere really).

I've got loads of wool off ebay to fill my craving for yarn.

If needed however, I could go to Ullapool which has an amazing wool shop - mainly Colinette yarns. However it's 70 miles away, so I'm hoping someone nearer will oblige.

It's ok - MuddyWitch PM'd me & I'll be sorted out in no time!

Thank you all though - the things you take for granted, huh?

I would have offered but dont know the first thing about wool, but if you are ever stuck and you write exactly what you need, there is a good little wool shop near where I work. :flower:

You can get bargains off ebay, and it's often more expensive buying wool from the local shop than online. For online suppliers, try http://www.abakhanfabrics.co.uk/ and http://www.celticove.com/for starters, but there's loads out there.

Nice idea, BirdieWife - problem is that we bank with Bank Of Ireland - who uses Laser cards.... we won't have Visa or such, so buying online from anywhere other than an irish online site is nigh on impossible. Even Paypal doesn't accept Laser, so we're a bit stuck :? Irish companies are notorious for not being up to speed with their sites too - B & Q Ireland takes you straight to the UK site - other irish sites might state their wares, but no prices & often no shopping facilities either!

I'm a person that used to buy EVERYTHING online - we even moved by applying for jobs & houses online too - put a year deposit on a house before we even saw it! So, yeah it's a culture shock not having Visa debit anymore, but luckily, MuddyWitch has come to my rescue is forever my saviour - what a superstar she is too :flower:

Thanks for the thought though - appreciated.
Julie.

I also bank with BOI and unless you have a very good reason not to, I would suggest one of their credit cards ... they do both Mastercard and Visa.
It makes life a lot easier as they are accepted everywhere and I do a lot of on-line shopping as well.

Hi Tony - Happy New Year!

Hubby won't even entertain the idea of getting Visa or Mastercard - he was ok in the UK when we had a Visa debit, but before he & I were together, he had debts of over 30 thousand on credit cards & learnt a hard lesson the hard way.... I understand his thoughts on the subject, but it's very frustrating :cussing:

Still, where there's a will, I always find a way

Thanks Julie and a Happy New Year to you both as well.

It's probably too late for you now but when we moved here we didn't close our UK Nat West account.
It gets topped up from time to time when the exchange rate is favourable and we have a Solo debit card for on-line payments to UK companies.

Regarding the BOI credit card, when we first got ours they gave us a massive £250 credit limit (Irish pounds) which of course has gone up and up over the years as they try to get us to over-extend ourselves :angryfire: but it might be worth a word at your branch about a low fixed credit limit.
Anyway, good luck with the wool and if it's any help there are a lot of hill sheep down this way ... I could send you one

Yep, when we moved to the new house, hubby shut the UK account

It's quite a learning curve moving here from UK city life, huh? But a nice one :sunny:

I recently noticed an advert for a prepaid card. You use it like a credit card but you have to top it up before you can use it. I don't know any more details than that but it might be a compromise. I can't even remember where I saw the advert or which bank it was (sorry that's not really much help is it?).

Does Paypal take your Laser card? Most ebayers have paypal options these days.

Aaahh... Maggie, Paypal....

Now, Paypal won't let me change my country - even though I contacted them directly.
So, when we did have our UK visa I couldn't use paypal because I couldn't update the address details to Ireland & then the bank wouldn't accept it, because the details were wrong....

I couldn't make a new account, because the card details (apart from address) were the same as registered before.... and no, they don't take Laser, even from the .ie site.
What I CAN do however, is use my alternate email & then 'prepay' from our bank account into it - I haven't yet, because even if I do that way, I'm still not going to be verified, so especially on Ebay, I look like a scammer! (Which I am, but only to hubby  )

So I guess I'll just save money - after all, if I found it too easy to shop online, we'd be broke very very soon, methinks!
