Lucky ol' us

Reading some of the threads regarding weeds, awful soil etc we are really crossing our fingers. The house we moved intop hadn't been lived in for at least 12 months and the garden was overgrown (still is to a large extent. Usual problem of not knowing what was in it. So farwe have nettles (had some good soups and omelettes from them) brambles ( berries to come later) some goosegrass and some creeping buttercup. None of it in great quantities, no couch, groundelder or bindweed that we can see. Usually you can see the remnants if not growing yet. Biggest problem is roots. Trees and shrubs all over the place so we are digging with a pair of secateurs in one hand most of the time. The soil is great, one area is 3" dep in beech leaves and there was a compost heap that hadn't been moved for goodness kbnows how long. Sue has been sterilizing it in the microwave to sude for the veg seeds. Best soil we have ever had, A big mound of stones that have become a cornish hedge filed with herbs. Some ransome in a nice self contained patch and wild garlic and broom all over the footpath and road outside. We are guerilla gardening with bits here and there and hope to have chickens in a wooded part. All this in 0.227 acres of garden (I used a cnversion thing on the net) If anyone is interested we are keeping a sort of running picture diary that we've started here

I love it - that's really my kind of garden with open areas, wild bits, woodland and pond. Oh hang on, that's exactly what I've got here except on a larger scale so not surprising really! Your garden does look lovely and it looks a lot bigger than it is! Happy gardening!

Good heavens you have a lifetime of fun there - you won't have time to move house ever again till you are both old and too decrepit to garden. Did you buy the garden and just need the house for shelter?

That's exactly what I did with my current house. The previous owner showed us into the garage first (that was my Ex hooked) then into the garden. We'd both mentally made an offer at that point without even seeing inside the house.

Cheers

We never got into the home owner thing so we rent. Our landlady and her husband have dorset sheep in the fields, beehives and also keep chickens themselves. They are also heavily into craft work so are of a like mind to us. Hopefully this is it for us until we start being fertilizer ourselves.
