Can anyone help please...

Post: # 151267Post gandt »

Hello

We are having problems with our veggies, they have sprouted to about 3/4inches high and we have taken them from the original bed and spaced them out, but they don´t seem to like this very much they have drouped :( , its only been 2 days since we have spaced them out, is this normal or have we done something wrong, the veggies concerned are our cucumber, onions, lettuces....
:(

Thank you
G and T

Have they had plenty of water both before and after transplanting?

Hi Shirley, yes the had plenty of water, my hubby is wondering if he didnt plant them deep enough, or perhaps we should of let them grow a little more? Luckly we didnt take out and re plant all of them so some are still alive, but of course we dont want the same problem to happen.
Also because its quiet hot here at the moment, we are watering them in morning and in the evening.

We has the same problem with our carrots but with plenty of water and mulch to stop evaporation they came good, they are probably a little bit shocked to be moved so give them a treat with a seaweed solution and they should be fine

You should be a bit careful about what vegetables you transplant as some don't like it. Not normal to transplant carrots, merely to thin out. Cucumbers don't like being disturbed. If you set out onions as sets, then these shouldn't be moved. If you have only just moved your onions and they were from seed it could be that it's a bit late in the season to do it .

Sometimes there's an objection to traces of the previous crop - onions for instance will sulk over runner beans having been there or being in close proximity. Shouldn't be problems with lettuces if there was enough root. But again, I'm apt to sow in the right place and then thin out.

My rules for veggies are rather simple:

peas I like to see chitted and set off in trays or small pots to get a root and a shoot then planted out and netted till large enough not to tempt birds
onions I do from sets and put out start of March no matter what the weather as they are day length sensitive
beetroot I don't move nor swedes nor garlic
carrots I sow thinly and thin out
parsnips don't like to be disturbed so are not moved
courgettes, marrows and cucumbers I bring on in small pots at home, harden off and plant out after last frost so minimal movement
cabbage family I like to set off in pots or trays to allow them to get a good root on before planting out - again not something I'd move

Well that's what works on my allotment from experience

Thank so much Flo, great advice! We will just thin out the carrots, we already moved the cucumbers but a few survived phew!
We are going to plant some more and see how that goes, (we dont have frost here). We had already moved the onions and they didnt seem to like this, but luckly we didn´t move them all. Unfortunately the Lizards ate our Broccoli and Lettuce but we are going to replant some more and get some mosiqto netting to cover the patch! We are also using old plastic bottles by cutting the top and bottom off and covering the veggies so the Lizards can´t get to them!
Recently we have been growing butternut squash, and need to plant them out now.
