I have a clump of plants (which just appeared) growing that look exactly like Comfrey, furry leaves droopy purple flowers, but the leaves stink if you touch them!
I have grown comfrey before but it never stank!!!
Any ideas???

I see you've now added a picture.
Look like lemon balm, but the leaves look a little more heart shaped. Can you describe the smell? Is it unpleasant, or just unexpected?
How about Agastache rugosa - Korean mint? I gather that smells of anise, or liquorice, I think.

No its a really nasty smell, certainly not something you would choose to sniff!!
I dont know how to describe it....like a dirty old dustbin with month old curry in!

It's called Hedge Woundwort and although it stinks to high heaven, it's supposed to be a natural antiseptic ... hence the name.

Thanks - Im not sure I want it in the garden due to the smell, seems a shame though as it has flowers, so bees like it?
