Create your own tomato variety

Post: # 183596Post Mal »

Has anyone joined in with the Realseeds 'Breed your own variety' scheme? I'm thinking of using their Delicious Early Bush Tomato Project for my tomatoes this year (and following years, I guess). I don't really have enough space to grow all 20 seeds myself so I might grow some and then try to persuade friends and family to grow out the rest and see what happens, collectively.

http://www.realseeds.co.uk/breedveg.htm, in case you haven't got a clue what I'm talking about.

I saw it on their website, but I'll be happy to gt my veg garden started this year and grow any tomatoes at all, so I won't be experimenting this year.

Looks interesting, though.

I did this last year, I was doing the vine tomato cross. This year they will be year 4 so I think thats F2

The fruit was brillant! Bigger than a cherry type gobstopper size nearing to a golfball size. The taste was really nice, and they fruited really early. Infact i had my first red one in May the earlist on the site. This year they are the only cherry type i'm growing as I rate the taste much better than GD. I was happy with all the plants I grew except one. I saved seed from the plants that were the easiest to train as a vine, some of the plants seamed to want to be bush types.

I have already sewn some of the seeds that I saved from last year and I'd say about 80% germinated. I will sew some more at the end of the month.

Although I grew all the plants I gave some away as baby plants to other plot holders. The chap nexed to me also really rated the taste and saved seed. I can't waite to see what we end up with this year. Although 2009 we had the same plants this year his may be different to mine depending on his selection criteria
