ID PLZ..Saffron Milk Caps & Suillus Granulatus Boletus?

Post: # 245110Post Tempest »

Hi,

I discovered a haul of fungi on way home.
They look amazing - and i want to eat them!! Just trying to confirm i wont die. PLeeease help :)

These were all found under a large old pine tree in large abundance. There are 2 different type - I suspect they are:

* Saffron Milk Caps - because of the saffron coloured milk when i cut the stem - also turns slightly greenish after some time.
* Suillus Granulatus - yellow non bruising spores, shiny look cap and slightly sticky when damp - general leathery texture

I would agree with your ID. The first ones are definately a suillus. The other ones look like saffron milk caps. Providing you check they produce orange milk then you are not likely to poison yourself.

Pheww!! Well, the Suillus went into an Omellette today and all is good. They are now marked in my mental map of the woods for next years haul.

Thanks :)

Your suillus, I'm fairly sure are what we would call a Slippery Jack - edible, if a little snot like on the top.

Snot-like - a wonderful description

I'm wondering how the author of a fungi guide would struggle to find a better phrase

My first thought was slippery jack, but slippery jacks have a ring on the stem whcih is not obvious to me in the pictures. However, the dotted stem is typical of S jacks.

Some guides say that slippery jacks need the caps peeling because the skin can give you the mild runs. However, I have often been lazy and not done this without any problems.
