I have two pear trees, absolutely laden in half-grown fruit. They have black spots on some of the fruit - is it too late to do anything about it now?

Sounds like this could be scab, similar but a slightly diff variety to that you get on apples.Inorganically you would use something like a taroil wash(now banned in the UK,but still around,) or some copper based stuff in late winter\ early spring,or organically just pick up\off any diseased leaves, twigs or fruit, and burn it. So if you've got LOADS of fruit, probably best pick off and burn the diseased fruit.

However, don't take the word of some idiot on the other side of the world whose never even seen your trees, best check out either The RHS or Garden Organic websites. Best Wishes.
