Slugs and Snails

I read an article earlier that seemed to suggest not all varieties of slugs and snails are pests, some slugs actually eat other slugs and do not bother your lettuce at all. When I come across a slug or snail on the garden I deal with it, I do not use slug pellets. As I am dealing with slugs and snails on a one to one basis if I was aware which are beneficial I would certainly not kill them.

I am hoping someone can help me identify the good guys?

Look forward to replies

Mike

Not sure that's a good idea, Mike. Apparently (according to Mr Google) they're giant slugs which are set to wipeout native species and are impervious to all known poisons. I don't know what use slugs are in the foodchain, other than maybe bird food but it doesn't sound good.

I have now seen large colonies of leopard slugs in my garden, they are carnivorous and will prey on other slugs, since finding them in much larger numbers, the amount of small grey slugs has reduced considerably, not sure if that is due to the slugs or the cool spring we had but I tend to just remove and kill the smaller grey slugs as they seem to do the most damage to my veg
