Yay! Now I can finally start composting. A bargain at £8, and far bigger than I thought.

So far I've put in some plant waste, teabags, shredded newspaper and some old strawberries.

One question I have, I was reading online what you can't put in it, and bread was listed. I understand why you can't put in meat etc but why not bread?

I've put bread in ours and it broke down OK.

I dont know why not but most of the info says no starchy foods but there are sites that say you can ... I feed all the local ducks with it anyway ..... Teabags dont break up either ... they are made not to break up in boiling water ... they just sit there and sit there ... and sit there ...

My teabags seem to be fine on the compost heap - haven't found any in the garden yet that haven't broken up!

Anyway, bread: I think they always say no cooked things because it's supposed to attract mice etc. Well, my mice are perfectly happily attracted by raw potatoes, too, so I don't see any reason why I shouldn't put bread and the like on the heap as well! The birds pick out the nicest bits on a daily basis, anyway.

I am one for simple things, simple ways and simples rules....

My simple rule for composting is anything that once lived can be composted.

We never put cooked stuff on our heaps, but they always have mice living in them - I think here they like the warm, moist conditions - especially during the winter!
