Apple press

Post: # 70044Post colhut »

I used some offcuts from re-joisting a floor to make an apple press, that and my trusty pot jack, which is in itself almost an heirloom (well it was my dads for as long as I can remember). Total cost about £16, I spent £9 on a chopping board that had a recess in it so I could catch the juice and the rest went on coach bolts.

It squeezes a 5in high pile of apple pulp down to about an inch, and whats left feels almost dry to the touch.

Go for it, but don't repeat my mistake, measure how high it really needs to be  mine is about a foot too tall (I allowed far far too much space for the apple pulp, about 5 inches is the most I can pile up) and hence the bricks (the jack can't extend that far). I will be modifying it sometime to bring the height down making it a little easier to use. Another thing, the jack is obviously quite capable of snappping the joist, you can see it bend under the strain, so go carefull !

and if its any help, the top and bottom joists are 100mm X 70mm and the uprights are 70mm x 50mm (specifically chosen, cos its what I had !)

Hey B&L
You're not that far from me - can I bring my apples round? Split the juice?
