Toilet rolls for plants
We've just planted our beans out, having had them in the toilet roll inners since we planted them about a month ago; seems to work really well, and the rolls themselves are degrading nicely in the ground already. We stood them in a tray, as Wulf suggested, which sorted the open-bottomed thing pretty...

Eco-shampoo
I've been using shampoos from Faith in Nature; they're not the world's cheapest at about three or four pounds a bottle, but I seem to be using less because they foam more easily, and apparently they are pretty green. Recommended by Brigit Strawbridge, no less.

I will certainly post some cob photos as soon as time permits; we've got one bit where we had to take out an old cooker socket which gives a good view of what the cob's like underneath the unholy cement-based render (which has given the house damp problems which are completely unnecessary; such a sh...

How fascinating! As someone who lives in a largely mud house, it's very interesting to hear about your building. Our house is made of cob - a combination of mud, straw, dung, and hair - and we've started doing some research on its use as a building material, largely because it's such a good idea! Oh...

Current garden projects
Hey there! I'm not an allotment-er, but thought I'd just post what we're growing in our garden this year. It's the first time we've had somewhere large enough to do vegetables at all, so it's just possible that I may have gone slightly overboard....! So far: Sprouts, courgettes (two sorts - one very...

Hi all! Nettle wine - not sure what it's like, but hoping to find out - there must be a reason why the little wretches keep springing up all over the garden, right? I'm still working on the washing-up doing itself - so far, the closest I've come is a rather large dishwasher, but it doesn't wo...

We basically run our house on rainwater. Nominally, we've got a well under our kitchen - the house is 350 years old, so it's been there quite a while, and during some recent updating on the well, we've discovered it's not really a 'proper' one but a catchpool, so it's not based on an underground spr...

Greenhouse question.
We've just moved to a house with a large-ish garden and a greenhouse, so are currently attempting to grow enough vegetables to feed the world... er, ourselves for a while without having to buy supplemental stuff. My question is this: is it worth shelling out for a greenhouse heater of the paraffin v...

Ginger beer continued...
Any feedback on that ginger beer recipe? I've tried several (quite similar) versions of that basic formula, but I've found mostly they turned out quite yeasty, which, in my view at least, wasn't that great. I did try one with root ginger, which came out quite similar to the 'Cool' Luscombe ginger be...

Hello!
Just wanted to say hello: found you via Kate's link on http://foritisi.blogspot.com, and thought I'd pop over, not least for some nettle wine tips!
