cough mixture

brilliant cough remedy, copied off http://www.nicelytoasted.net You know those nasty coughs you get at the end of a cold? The ones that are worse at night or when laying down and won’t let you sleep? I hate those. Here’s a brilliant remedy that works in seconds and lasts all night (well, nearly)...

I have several misgivings about canola/rapeseed oil, not least, that much of it is genetically modified, which causes a real problem for organic growers. The problem has become so great in North America that Canadian organic farmers have stopped growing it. I’m also highly suspicious of the market...

Morning Bridgette, I think that our experience down here in southern Italy sounds a little similar to yours - most of the stuff that we gleaned from books is of no use to us owing to climate extremes! For us, the best source of information, has been from our neighbours. There is no substitute for th...

Here's a link with freezing veg tips. http://www.gardenguides.com/how-to/tipstechniques/vegetables/freezing.asp You can freeze cauliflower cheese, but why not add some of the other root veg into the mix? I've just had a big bowl of curried carrot and lentil soup - that would freeze well and use the ...

It would seem that the leaves, bark, skin and stone are the worst but even the flesh can be fatal for some (including humans). Thankfully not me, which is lucky, as I really, really like them.

It's very common here in Puglia to recycle old fridges as raised beds. We've wombled several from the bins and they've, so far produced peppers, carrots, cabbages, peppers, beetroot, chillies, tomatoes and gigantic basil and parsley. Come spring I'm going to try and grow asparagus from seed in one. ...

Avocados are poisonous to chickens (I only discovered this after one of ours died suddenly after eating a whole one by herself). I just did a quick search having read this thread and it seems they are toxic to birds, cats, dogs, horses, rabbits, fish, cattle and goats. http://www.aspca.org/site/Page...

I'm with chickenlady on his one. I'm not really keen on the labels downshift and downsize though. By selling our London apartment and leaving office jobs we've managed to rid ourselves of the mortgage millstone and traded up to a mortgage-free house in the country with one and half hectares of land....

I have two nieces that have suffered badly with eczema over the years. One's cleared up completely when she swapped cows for goats milk and the other finds relief in sea water (she's in her thirties now and still flairs up when stressed and/or overworked).

cheese making - 19 recipes

I've got my cheese-making head on today and came across a pdf that contains 19 recipes. Not sure how to attach a pdf so if you google "Jerry Issa easy cheese cookbook" it will come up. Worth a gander if you're feeling cheesy.

Most recipes say use Italian "00" but any strong white works. I always use about third semolina flour as it's the same price over here, but it's not absolutely necessary and you won't notice a great difference in taste or flavour. I use a couple of broom-like handles and a couple of chairs...

Egg-free pasta

Here's a lovely and simple recipe for egg-free pasta much loved in Puglia. Serves two greedy people as a main. 200g/7oz plain flour 100g/3.5oz semolina flour (you can just use plain, just semolina or even wholemeal - I personally like a mix) Pinch of salt Enough tepid water to make a dough Heap the ...

You can cut the shapes that you like with a knife, no problem. The problem is getting the dough thin enough in the first place, which is where the pasta machine comes in handy. But if you have the time and the patience then rolled up sleeves and a rolling pin should suffice. The majority of pasta ma...
