I did the bare bum in the garden thing with my 2 - and very time the wee'd I say "Oooohh wee wee" in a loud and happy voice - just so as they would know what it was. Once they started recognising it and giving it a name I put them in pants and if they wet them I'd let them stay wet for a while so they understood it was uncomfortable. They soon got the hang of saying wee wee before they'd done it! Also, my son had a friend who was a year older who taught him to wee up against the fence - I guess you'd call it pee-er group tutoring!

Lol! I'm glad to hear it's not just me who made up silly songs to encourage my littlies to do stuff! But it works!
We had an eating song -
Chew Chew Chew
Swallow Swallow
Put the food in your tum
Let it swish all around
And make a poo to come out of your bum!
(To the tune of Cang Clang Clang went the trolley!)
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

To the tune of Oh Mr Porter:
Oh Darling daughter
What can we do?
You've got a stinky nappy on
that's chock-a-block- with poo!
It's oozing out the leg holes
And seeping out the waist
Oh Mummy please come quick
And change it - with all haste!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Total bollocks. When our boys were at our local nursery, the owner/manager encouraged all parents to have their children in re-useable nappies as it kept the waste disposal costs down.

The nursery had clear H&S guidelines to dealing with both nappy changing and hygienic wrapping of the dirty nappies. Dirty nappies were wrapped and stored in a separate bag to the child's spare clothes. This bag was hung on a higher peg, out of reach of the children.

The procedure was no different to that followed when a child had a major poo escape and dirtied their clothes as well as the nappy. (All nurseries have to deal with this one, so if they can deal with crappy clothes then they can deal with re-useable nappies.)

The main thing is for the nursery to have clear procedures for staff and parents to follow, and for it to ensure those procedures are adhered to.

we found that getting sophs favorite teddy to wee and poo on the ptty got her eager to do it too. wee can be administered using a msall pot hidden behind the teddy' and poo is made thus;
1. large spoon plain flour
2. contents of used tea bag
3. cold tea or coffee
stir all together, mix ith hands. you want a thick dough. roll nto balls. keeps for days in fridge. give the teddy lots of praise
oh how I love my tea, tea in the afternoon. I can't do without it, and I think I'll have another cup very
ve-he-he-he-heryyyyyyy soooooooooooon!!!!

mrsflibble - love the "poo recipe" (never thought I'd find myself writing that!)

As for the pre-school not accepting re-useable nappies, I'm disgusted at their attitude. My 13 month old son is in a local nursery one afternoon a week and I simply send along a nappy bag (plasticky lined fabric outer drawstring bag) which they put his nappy into and then place this into his little rucksack which contains his clean nappies & change of clothing. I would refuse to send a child in 'disposable' nappies and quote a lot of landfill facts at them! My oldest son had horrible rashes whenever his childminder put him into the horrible chemical filled 'disposable' nappy.

In NZ people would kick up a major fuss if refused. I must check with DD preschool on their stand. She is toilet trained (3), but using cloth is becoming very "normal" here in NZ, over half the people in antenatal classes are saying that they intend on using cloth. We recently ran a cloth nappy info night for "real nappy week' and it was full. They will only change when people make a stand and/or provide solutions. Good luck.
