Cat with sunburn ears

My dear old lady puss cat has been enjoying lying outside in the sunshine these last couple of days, and I've just noticed that her ears look rather pink. I think she may have caught the sun! Is there anything I can put on her ears to stop it happening? And please dont say a hat!

I had a white cat which was really prone - and apparently they can get skin cancer so it is serious - so I put sunblock on the tips of her ears.

Easier said than done though, I had to flip the cap of the bottle in the other room cos if she heard it she´d bolt for the cat flap!

I did wonder about sun block - but I was concerned that if she groomed it might upset her tum.

I just wiki-ed zinc oxide for you, which is a mineral sunblock that you should be able to get neat from a pharmacy. Apparently it is licensed as a food additive, normally as the source of zinc in fortified breakfast cereals. I suspect that would be the best thing for her stomach, I expect there are specific products on the market but they are probably just zinc oxide and a bunch of preservatives!

A ha! Isn't zinc and castor oil and old fashioned babys bum cream? I bet that would work - and I'm sure I have some knocking around somewhere. If I'm right it would protect and sooth her ears. Poor old lady - shes as blind as a bat and deaf as a post so until now she's been an indoor cat, but she escaped thru the cat flap a few times and simply walked from the back of the house round to the front and sat on the door step, but she really seemed to enjoy being out in the fresh air. So we bought her a harness and lead and attached her to the front door with some washing line so she can have a wee wander around the garden but go no further. She's loved being outside, rolling around on the warm path and sleeping in the sunshine. She does get a bit stuck sometimes tho - she stood on her lead with her back foot and looked completely befuddled cos she was stuck!! She's a real batty old baggage but we love her!!

Yep zinc oxide is the only effective barrier against nappy rash, so it´s bound to be in there.

Your kitty sounds like a honey, full of personality, we used to have a spaniel who was deaf and virtually blind in her old age - man, did she cause some chaos with it though (we took her travelling round europe in an old ambulance when she was 14).

I have three cats and at this moment in time 2 homegrown kittens who are running up and over the sofa and throwing things off shelves as I type....little tikes!

Oh she certainly is a personality - she's like one of those disgusting old aunties who eat all the cake and give you whiskery toothless kisses! She's actually a pedigree Turkish Van - you know - the swimming cats. We acquired her from Freecycle just over a year ago. She had belonged to a couple who did missionary type work in Africa and when she was younger she went with them. As she became old and less able to travel she stayed with a lovely lady who unfortunately developed lupus and had to go into res-care - so Willow was Freecycled and we were the lucky ones! When she came here she was a bit of a "Duchess" but with the influence of "the boys" - Ozzy and Dio - our other 2 cats- and lots of yummy food - (last night she licked the Greek yoghurt and honey icecream tub clean) she's turned into a disgusting old baggage who thoroughly enjoys life!
