Origami newspaper pots for seedlings
I read the explanation of how to make pots for seedlings out of newspaper; I agree you don't need any special equipment, and that would be more consuming....we Greens used to be a target for ridicule and thought of as cranks and loony hippies etc. but now being "green" is economically acceptable it's suddenly trendy....typical! More about that on another part of the forum when I get round to it!
Anyway, I have a way of making newspaper pots which only involves one piece of newspaper and uses origami-type folding to end up with a neat little pot with a built-in base. It's square, rather than round, but I don't think the plants mind too much.
Like the ones shown on this site, they have a base which is much thinner than the sides, and this means when they are in the ground and damp, the base gives way easily and allows the roots to grow down through the bottom easily.
I can't really demonstrate or describe how to do it here, but I can send them out to people, with explanation which is easy to understand, together these will make it easy to copy.

Hi, there's a website I found through another forum which explains with pictures:

Lots of people swear by them, once you get the hang of it they are easy to do.

Thanks for that, I've been racking my brains on how to do it all of yesterday and this morning.

I've used this method for the first time this spring, my seedlings are growing well but I have noticed some white fluffy mould/fungi growing on the outside of the newspaper pots.. I planted some seedlings in bought jiffy pots at the same time, kept in the same place but they have not developed this mould unless they're right next to the cardboard ones.
It's been on them for a few weeks now though and they seem to be thriving otherwise. I expect it's because the newspaper holds the water in more than jiffy pots do, it is pretty damp. Hopefully it won't be an issue but just something to bear in mind for those who want to try this, I'll comment again if anything adverse occurs!
