four days after our debarcle trying to mow the lawn and finally suceeding we got a letter from our leting agents saying that the landlord has arranged fro a lady called Winnie to come and mow our lawn once a month and could we give her access to a plughole please.....

erm, no. no we can't. We own a lawnmower, it's crap but it does the job. We fell that offer is like saying "I'm going to send someone round to do a monthly inspection, but you wont know they're doing it".

Or am I being cynical?!

what does it say in your rental agreement? are they supposed to do the lawn? are you sposed to cover the cost of this other lady?

Mowing the lawn isn't weird (a landlord offering to do it is improbable but not impossible, I suppose) but asking for access to your electricity supply makes my bullshit detector go ping. If you don't happen to have a weatherproof socket outside, what are you supposed to do? Give Winnie a copy of your front door key?

Personally I might arrange to be out whenever they come to call... but to add to that I would have the grass neatly mowed the day before... just to stick it to them.

Is it possible that they are just not happy about the state of the lawn? maybe they saw it before you had cut it and thought you weren't coping? Maybe they are just interested in keeping their property looking tidy? (giving them the benefit of the doubt here)

Or yes... maybe they are coming to snoop around.

our rental agreement says we are supposed to do it, which is why we bought the mower. We've not been told about any costs to ourselves.
the downstairs of this house is open plan so my concern is, if winnie looks through into the kitchen she will see the whole of the ground floor; and with a two year old toy-bomber in the house I'm concerned what she'll report back to the landlord.

I think they're taking the p***, for all the reasons mentioned so far. If it were me I'd be tempted to let it grow as long as possible and hope a few rare plants or endangered creatures 'found' their way in! Either that or get a goat to keep the grass down. But since you probably want to not be evicted, I'd say keeping on top of it-within reason- and avoiding Winnie is the best bet.

I would phone the letting agents and have it out with them. tell them it's in your rental agreement, and you will cut the grass. As you don't won't strange people in and around your house as you have a small child. while your paying rent on it, it's your home.

Yep. unfortunately I have to wait until James can do it 'cos I'm not actually on the tenancy agreement; they know I'm here but at £250 a pop we couldn't afford a second referencing and they were happy to do it this way, the landlord knows I'm here too. grrr.

just say yes if the landlord is unhappy with your current maintenance of the lawn, you will more than be happy for someone to mow it with a petrol lawnmower as you cannot guarantee when you will be in. If you are already mowing it, he cannot complain.
