Do you keep livestock? Having any problems? Want to talk about it, whether it be sheep, goats, chickens, pigs, bees or llamas, here is your place to discuss.
Well......we are all sitting here staring at an egg with a crack in it, but I'm a bit concerned as its been like this for about 3 hours now with no more signs of life or noise. How long do these things take should I give a hand Help
Never been a midwife before

Three days over due and not looking good shell cracked on one and no more action. Others not a sign of anything.
Oh so sad.
My friend who took the other 5 and popped them under a broody hen has no luck yet either, we'll know by Monday
aww dont know what to suggest hun, it`s heartbreaking , i know
if this lot in my incu don`t hatch i will go a buy some pol hens but i dont know where to get them from on the Wirral??
anyone know??
does anyone deliver live hens or is that a no no?
Hi There,
Sad day, two DIS (dead in shell)
But can only put it down to drop in temp.
Would really love to try again, but is it the right thing to do or just go for pols.
On your other subject you could google a local supplier or contact Omlet they may deliver that far.
Good luck with your hatchings let us know how you get on.
Becks
If it is any consolation I have had a few DIS in our incubator too (an octogon 10), it is sad when it happens, the only survivor from that hatch (between infertile eggs..didn't candle them..and DIS) turned out to be a cockeral He is still with us though as we have plenty of space and no immediate neighbours.

awww sorry Becks
will you try again? or buy pols? I think buy pols if this lot dont work I just couldnt do it again
I tried omlet but they dont delivery in my area, they say the nearest breeder is in Cheshire, but i still dont know where?
I candled mine today and its not looking good they seem to be clear so far
I have a 10ftx5ft unused dog kennel (my huskies never liked it they prefer to sleep on my bed!!) just waiting for some chooks
Might give it one more go then over to POLs, that way you are sure of what you get.
Ah wellthis is life I suppose but very sad sometimes,
Kind thoughts

switched inc after candeling today one eggs had a blood ring the others are all clear. The lady I brought off from eBay is going to replace them so will try one more time. If they don`t defo buying some POL`s
The friend who put his eggs under the broody had no luck either and those eggs came from ebay too, perhaps they just don't travel well. Is there anywhere local you could collect from?
yeah i dont think the postal service is the best way to get eggs, its too easy to addle *sp* ( shake them until their no longer viable) them.
one last go

Don't be afraid to itervene if this happens again. On 3 occaisions I have done this when an egg got a crack or small hole and then stopped. You CAN help a tired chick out if you are careful and take your time.
First carefully make the crack/hole a little bigger - you will probably be able to make out a beak. With a syringe offer a drop of water - in all my 3 cases the chick was thirsty! Then carefully pull away small bits of the shell. Here is one I did last week:
Then I put some warm water in a sink and lowered the chick into it (not covering its beak of course) and peeled away the membrane. It can have blood vessels in it - but these have to be broken anyway. Do it slowly - I did this over 1 hour. The warmth might just make your chick more active too.
Here is the chick 2 hours after being 'peeled':
Aw wow that is fantastic, wish I'd stepped in now, however won't hesitate if it happens again.
Good advise. Thank you.
Is it possible for the chick to try to hatch too early?..
Will definitely get some more hatching eggs after the hols
