I read that it can take 10 years to get a fruit producing plant... but some folks in south of England have managed outdoors to grow the fruit...
Alas Ina... we'll need to stick to the rhubarb and strawberries.

most banana plants are grown in northern nsw or Queensland, So when my uncle said he had a banana tree in his front yard his mate said no way or if you do they won't fruit. My uncle invited him over and said "look up." He was standing under a huge bunch of bananas! Congrats Fee on your persistance. The plant looks really healthy.
Always look for the positive.

Re: Finally! I've done it!! At Last!!
Update! Update!
[insert smug grin]

Isn't she doing splendidly!
She's about 2 foot tall.
I'm contemplating bringing her in at night now that the temperature has dropped considerably - but would that do more harm than good do you think
Should I just leave her where she is - which, by the by, is the only sunny spot in the garden at this time of year.

I am inspired....thank you fee-fairy you don't know what you've done
. I will now be able to heat my home properly, knowing that by doing so, we might - one fine day - get some fruit....wooh hooo.
At least that's what I'll be telling the energy saving, jumper wearing OH.
I'm up in the cold too - and yet - with a lil inspiration, and valid heat, I might yet get some tasty exotic fruit. Next house I'll be begging for a solar room, and living in my no-frills household, I'll probably be building it too. I believe it just might be worth the builders blisters though - I read recently of someone who had successfully grown 70+ bannana's in Glousestershire http://environment.uk.msn.com/news/head ... It's true - thought creates - no one believed the 4 min mile could ever be broken - until it was....again...and again!!

I've got a pineapple plant, which I grew from a top 2 years ago. I thought I'd get a pineapple this year, but no sign of one yet.
Ah well, there's always next summer.
There should be a pic of it on here. Here's hoping (as you can see, its very late/early here)

Wow - splendid. One of these days....soon...I will have something splendid sitting on my window sill too....just have to convince the OH that it's worth the heat. Will do the maths and convince him so!
