Our front garden has been vandalised!

Yes, we've lost a 4/5m oak, a 5/6m topiary/shaped conifer, a 3m holly and a small conifer type bush....

The trees don't interfere with anyone's light or sightlines, most people down our road have trees and bushes in the garden, as we're in a rural area.

The trees were there way before we moved in, and although I know that our garden is a bit worse for wear (the hedge and lawn need a good tidy up) it's not bad enough for someone to take that kind of action.

The Police think it was a deliberate act of criminal damage, and we have a small suspicion of who it might have been. Sadly, I doubt anything can be proven unless someone actually confesses to it.

There should be fingerprints on the trunks. They would've had to hold them to guide the fall.

I thought about that too - but sadly, judging by my experience of the police around here, the poice don't seem to be too bothered about that sort of thing. I mean after all its not a "real" crime like burglary or murder! Why on earth should they bother about a few trees being cut down - it's not as if someone has had their privacy invaded or that they are being harassed or vicitmised by anyone after all! How silly that they should feel so agrieved about something like that. And after all it's not going to lead to anything else is it? Oh and yes I am being heavily sarcastic! The trouble is that the kind of toe rags that do that sort of thing and get away with it, because no-one bothers to stop them, don't stop there, but it's not until it's too late that the "powers that be" get off their backsides and take action. It's quite likely that it will be passed off as a "boyish prank" and it won't be until the people involved do some major harm to someone or their property that any notice will be taken.

So sorry for you and your family - that is a disgusting invasion of privacy and property.

I would contact the local newspaper and get them to right up about it - knowing local rags as I do, that sort of story is right up their street (excuse the pun).

Far be it from me to point fingers - but have you worked out possible sight-lines? And the potential for your trees to have blocked those sight-lines? In the meantime, you have all my sympathy. Negative IQs are always difficult to comprehend.

I did have exactly the same thought.
Maybe not known to you but it's quite possible that your trees were annoying a neighbour.

Presumably you would be able to see if other trees were cut locally? It doesnt sound like mindless vandalism but that your trees were deliberately targeted. I'd guess it was mistaken identity or someone who didnt like the trees for whatever reason. Still, what goes around comes around, they will get their just rewards sometime (we hope). Mindless ,, yes - I've seen that happen before and it was a neighbour who was becoming senile and objected to not being able to see further down the street, If it's for more nefarious reasons I'm pleased to hear you have dogs

Chopping down trees is actualy pretty quick and easy, especialy if the trunks are only 5 or 6 inches thick as they seem to be

Cut out a triangle 1/3 to half way through from one side then cut a flat above it until it snaps and falls, its surprisingly accurate.
A good sharp saw and 15 minutes is all it would take to fell a tree that size.
I also spotted electric chainsaws in T***o for about £30 today.

chopping trees down is not all that easy to do and have them land excactly where you want them crown shape and trunk shape have to be taken in to account. (sorry i'll get of my horse now)
hope fully all trees will regrow as coppiced wood which means you should get several new shoots starting from below the cut (sorry couldn't veiw piccys ) you can either let these grow as a large shrub which will eventually grow into several large trees or select one shoot trim all others off and grow as a tree .
