Hazel growing from stakes
Just a quick query, I used some of the cuttings from a coppiced hazel to create a woven compost bin. I have noticed since that the sticks that were driven into the ground have nearly all sprouted. Does this mean that they have taken root as if a giant cutting or is it just a slow term reaction of the tree, i.e. it was already geared up to sprout before it was cut!
Surely it is better to have grown it and eaten it than never to have grown it all?
a lot of trees will continue to grow if you stick 'em in the ground (willow in particular is known to do this). I wasn't specifically aware of hazel doing it, but it is a quick growing species so I'm not totally surprised. Just think, now you're compost bin really will be green

I took suckers off my twisted willow and standard willows in February along with other hardwood cuttings and stuck 'em in a nursery bed and they are all growing like the clappers.
Next year I'm going to take loads of cuttings from my poplars and willows and grow them on with the intention of planting up a load of them for coppicing in a few years time.
Juddy ... where in the Charente are you? You're not that far from me.

How's the veggies going? Mine seem to be doing okay, not seen any Colorado beetle yet, tried buying a soil testing kit in Anguoleme the other day and got my very poor french strangled, ended up asking for a worm testing kit!!
30 k's? in which direction?
