oi!

The competition is supposed to be a bit of fun, with fun themes, not a deep critique of subject and focus and arrangement.

So...behave!

The poll will be closed on Sunday, when the winner will be announced and they will be choosing the next topic!

Please remember, this is not a SERIOUS competition, it is for everyone to show their little bit of the world, or a little bit that they like, not to be judged on photography skills, just on picture and subject. The picture of the rose is beautiful, but the one of the bloke with the umbrella sums up the british summer perfectly! Determination, even in the rain to have a barbecue!

So no bickering, or there won't be another competition!

I've just read the entire thread not having seen this before.

Please can we keep photos to a specific size so that the text doesn't go off the screen? It is a real pain having to keep going backwards and forwards to read this thread.

(Also photos of flowers and insects are NOT THE WEATHER!!!).

Oh I am terribly sorry, but he did actually ask for an opinion, it's just geek talk.

I must agree including the the last part.

sorry my pic was a bit wide, it's hard to know what size screen people are using, what size would you recommend?

Here is what the rules said...

"They can be arty, abstract, obvious, anything you like!"

Perhaps just a bit too flexible :cooldude:

I don't know what size the photos should be. That's too techy for me.

A little bit smaller but a lot bigger than Citizen Twiglet's, which was way too small.

Hope that helps.

LoL..

May I suggest that the minimum size is 400pixels and the maximum size 640pixels

Although it may be unreasonable to give a minimum size as changing the size might not be easy for some one using say a cheap phone camera or similar, who does not normally play with graphics software but wants to enter.

Also, it would appear possible to to link to a larger version of a picture following this method:

Code: Select all

which looks like so (this is a 400 pixel wide image, actually this picture looks better smaller, more weathery LoL)

Image

click on the image for an enlargement

Perhaps that could be encouraged for those who feel the need for more detail to be available.

this is a 640 pixel wide image

Hope that helps :flower:

From my point of view (i.e. my screen!) it could be bigger than the 640 pixels unless one could click on the link to make the picture bigger. I think it also rather depends on the subject matter i.e. a small flower or insect and we'd need to see the piccy bigger. Possibly 800 pixels?

The ones that went off the page for me were probably 1000 pixels? I have a wide ish screen but not one of the really wide ones I saw recently
- about twice as wide as high!

chances are that some people are still using 800px wide screens, which means that they will have the same problem you have been having with images 1024px wide.

If a picture of an insect is close enough up, and or cropped 640px should be more tham enough.

Code: Select all

this is an 800pixel wide image - you can click on it for an enlargement

worth considering that the bigger the images, if people are going for quality, then each one could easily weigh in at half a megabyte, which disadvantages people on slower connections. One page of your forum could be 8 megabytes, obviously not coming off your server or using your bandwidth, but still slow for the person looking at the page if not using broadband.

I guess that it really depends if you are adjusting this to suite the admin team, or the users.

You should be able to look in your logfiles and see what the most common screen size is, also how many people are using the smaller sizes. The most common screen resolution at the moment is 1024 x 800.
then 800 x 600, after that it all goes wonky with a whole gamut of screen resolutions some of them incredibly big and bizzare.

I run at 1280 x 1024, many laptops are wide screen (letter box shaped), and width here is what we are concerned with.

Anyway, I doubt that has helped you really, and I am sure that you know most of this already. So I'll shut up now.

Sorry ... somehow I thought the subject was Summer haven't got the foggiest why - must have been the picture of a barbecue in the rain ... anyway, I'll insist that my rose photo is weather related - it has rain drops on it ...

I think it is a lovely and most excellent picture, and in the good humour with which you  ed, may I  back and suggest that your Rose has water on it but, there is no contextual connection between the water and rain or the weather, the water could just as easily have been from a plant sprayer, or a hose for that matter. The Rose also has light on it, which I guess came from the sun :flower:

Oooh gosh! I'd forgotten all about this! My computer crashed when I was uploading the photo and I forgot to even check it was here! I didn't think it would have uploaded
My apologies.....thank you AXJ for the prompting PM!

Now, to thank my mum and dad, the Scottish weather, Millets for the groundsheet.......

The next subject....mmmm....now then......let me think.......

What about LEISURE TIME. Photos of how you like to kick back, chill-out and do whatever you like to do to make you feel good???

Or is that a bit uninspired??
I took my dog to play frisbee. She was useless. I think I need a flatter dog.
