Yesterday morning when my veg box was delivered (very early!) I was still in bed and so didn't get up to answer the door. As usual, the delivery guy pushed the box well under the side gate. When I got up, I forgot about it until I was about to leave for work. As a left the house I saw it, but didn't have time to go back and take it in or I would miss my bus. When I got back from work, I found that someone had reached through and pulled the box right up to the (padlocked) gate and taken most of the stuff out!
Maybe I'm just been silly, but I feel quite upset about it... Why would someone take something that didn't belong to them?
Look around you, that is the world we live in, Sick isn't it? I'm but when I read about GEOs of huge Companies stealing from investors, governments stealing natural resources from other countries, land from peasant farmers, elections that people vote in, why are we surprised that some think that this the norm we should live by.
I can't do great things, so I do little things with love.
Sorry this happened to you.
I don't think you're being silly I'd feel the same.
Years back when my house was burgled it wasn't so much that stuff had been taken, it was more the thought that someone had just thought that whoever did it just thought it was ok to go into my house & take it that got to me.
Were the people who took your stuff hungry? I'm guessing not.
My mother was a volunteer in a charity shop and the stuff in there got shoplifted.
I generally believe that people are decent ( or I want to believe) but sometimes it's a hard belief to sustain.
Love the art in yourself, not yourself in the art.
I know how you feel, when I was 17 and living at home I had a horse(a rescue one)and I used to pick up all the muck and bag it up and sell it outside for 50 pence a bag to go towards feed etc as I was on YTS £35 a week and paid for everything myself. My Mum used to collect me from work and I would get all excited when we got home if the bags had gone and rushed to empty the money tin only to find it had gone too......
It is awful when you cannot have something left outside without being stolen. We are pretty fortunate here, out in the countryside with people if anything being on the honest side, which is good. A local man grows and sells plants every year at his gate to raise money to help pay for the wells dressings in the village (local tradition in Derbyshire) he leaves a collection box for people to leave their donations, hung by the wall. I buy some plants, and obviously leave the money, and hopefully others do too.
Also, I sell my free range eggs at the field gate. Put the eggs in a box outside the gate. People take the eggs, and leve the money in the box, with the lid down. So far, every box of eggs has been paid for, and the money has still been in the box when I return from work. So, not everyone is dishonest, and I think people like to be trusted like this.
I'm so sorry to hear this I have a veg box delivered too and I have to admit that I've been worrying that people might help themselves so I get up early on a Thursday morning to rescue it from the front door step. You sound local to me - you're not delivered by Eden Farms are you? They are a lovely lovely group of people, get in touch & let them know what happened, worth a try.
Unfortunately, you can't leave anything outside here. I, too, had a veg box stolen while I was at work. I've also had a door mat stolen. It's a sad fact that this is the world we live in.
Thank you for the sympathy guys, I feel better now! But I trust a little less....
Ratty, I'm in Nottingham too, but the box was from River Nene. I'm alright for veggies - my small garden is starting to yield now - so I won't bother mentioning it to them. I'll just get up earlier on a Friday to get the box in before work!
Sorry to all those who've had a similar experience! I wish an ideal world was possible...
It's not a good feeling when stuff like this happens to you, I love the honesty boxes folk leave alongside their veggies etc at the ends of drives/roadsides in NZ. As someone else mentioned in this thread people appreciate the trust in them and it makes them feel good about themselves and the world around them.
Hopefully it won't happen again to you.
someone local to my mum has hens, and therefore eggs. they used to have an honesty box but now they've asked that when you buy eggs, you are to put the cash into an envelope and post it through their door.
I like to see honesty boxes; it makes me realise that it's not just m who has a little faith left in common decency. it's always so sad to hear of an experience like Fizzy's. Hugs Fizzy.
oh how I love my tea, tea in the afternoon. I can't do without it, and I think I'll have another cup very
ve-he-he-he-heryyyyyyy soooooooooooon!!!!
quite frankly, have u seen the price of food? This year and last has been record for farm, allotment and garden raids as well. People are hungry and average folk in this country cannot afford to eat properly these days. Even i have had to readjust what i eat and how much i grow because of what i can or cannot afford and im living on an average wage. Same goes for heating oil. Its being nicked all the time up here in the highlands. Some is even being nicked for fuel for their diesel cars, which is obviously quite dangerous. Its just the way things are going these days sadly.
