Holy potatoes

Post: # 112552Post The Prehistorian »

I've started pulling up my first earlies. Everything seems fine apart from the fact that around one in every twenty or so has a single hole in it. The hole is a little thinner than a pencil and goes in around 1.5 cm. Having closely examined these holes and the potatoes that they are in there is no evidence of anything living in there and the potato itself looks perfectly healthy (and tastes fine - although I cut the bit around the hole out before cooking). The hole is not the result of my fork puncturing it: wrong size and shape, plus I didn't use the fork to dig all of them.

Any ideas of what it might be and should I be worried?

The holes are from slugs. They burrow down to get away from the sun, and if they find a potato, they eat.

Slugs indeed - in fact, it sounds more like keel slugs. And they live in the soil, so you will get more damage. Luckily, your situation doesn't sound bad enough to panic and dig everything up.
