Pigs - the Runt

I recently collected my two Berkshire boys and they settled in fine. We noticed on day one (they were ten weeks old) that one was just a fraction smaller than the other but you really had to look to see which one. However, in the two weeks that they've been here the difference has really grown. The larger one is what I imagine he should be like. When I scratch his back I can feel his back bone but it's not bony, just knobbly with a cushion - if you see what I mean. The smaller one's backbone is bony. I realise this isn't a scientific analysis but not sure how else to explain it! In all other respects both pigs are seemingly fit and healthy. They are feeding well on pig nuts and grass, they are drinking well and they always seem pleased to see me. They both have slightly runny manure but I believe this is the effect of the grass.

Have I just got the runt or should I be worried? This is the first time we've had pigs and they are a joy. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Have you checked for worms (internal parasites)?

Yup sounds like worms to me, a wee dose of 'Pancur' in his feed should sort him out and you'll be amazed how quickly he catches up with the other chap.

Thank you both. I wormed them both yesterday and the day before. We'll see how he develops. I think the bigger one is a bit of a bully though. Typical older brother...!

Also make sure to put the feed out in several piles. With two pigs, I put the feed out in at least 3 piles - that way they get their fare share rather than the stronger pig pushing the weaker one off the food. The stronger the bigger pig gets, the more of a bully it will become.
