'Ow Bist

Post: # 10318Post Karen_D »

Hello All

Been trying to join the forum but between the set up, being unable to verify my e-mail and actually wondering if it was me that made it all crash, it took me three attempts and a very old e-mail address (that it won't let me change 'cause it says my new one is already registered but it won't let me log in and...)

Well, anyway, I'm on now! I'm Karen and I've been interested in frugal living and a low impact lifestyle for some time but have only recently got started with trying to be more properly self-sufficient. I've just (yesterday) been given two allotment plots and we are hoping to use those for lots of veg and some fruit. We are using the back garden for some more fruit, herbs and keeping chickens. We built the chicken house yesterday and will be getting four friesian fowl in the next two weeks.

Lots of work to do but it's very nice to know that I'm not the only one who thinks like this.

Hello Karen.

Where's Mercia, then? Presumably it's where they sing the songs about going a-wassailing, but I don't really know what that is either.

Sounds like you've got plenty to keep yourself busy with.

Hi Karen

Full marks for perseverance! You weren't the only one with problems logging on, if it's any consolation... I'm glad you made it.

And what on earth are Friesian fowl? I know Friesian cows, and sheep, but hadn't heard of the feathered version until now.

Lucky you getting two allotment plots, they are like gold dust around these parts.

Hello there Karen, sorry about the logging on stuff it was eaiser in the past then we started to get a load of spam so I had to put up some defences.

Two allotments eh? That will keep you busy, one is supoosed to be enough for vegetables for a family of four. I guess it depends on how much veg you eat

Hi All

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Mercia is the old Anglo-Saxon Kingdom which covered what is now the Midlands and a few other bits of England.

Friesian Fowl look like this

http://www.poultryclub.org/Wernlas/graphics/FriesTh.gif

I think they are pretty and they fact that they are good layers (200 eggs per year per hen) and quite small make them good for backyard hen keeping.

We do eat a lot of veg and also fruit. We can't do much veg growing in the garden because of various mature trees, which I quite like, and a neighbours conifer hedge :cussing:. We've got room for a greenhouse, a small pond, the chickens, herbs and perhaps some fruit, but veg would be a non-starter.

If we over-produce on the allotments, we'll haggle with friends for other stuff.

Wassail

Hiya Karen :hello2: and welcome.

I am relatively new here too ... having a slow start to becoming self-sufficient ... more so a time factor to getting set-up & learning all i need to know ... but this sure is the right place to be :flower:
