Self Sufficiency Day....who did/made anything new?

Post: # 119264Post kiwirach »

the delicate minded may want to turn away now!.

today i made and used  wee wipes!!. ages ago i went to a car boot sale and brought 5 flannelette bassinette sheets costing 50p each. i cut up 3 into 8 pieces to make 24 wipes, put them into the bathroom, along with a bowl of water with half a steralizing tablet(like you'd use for cloth nappies....or i did yrs ago!), because i only run the machine 2-3x/wk.
being nerdy that i am, i have noted how many rolls of loo paper i have, and will be interested to see when i have to buy anymore.

sooo....has anyone else done something new to them?

I taught my friend and her daughter how to make soup in a slow cooker and I've knitted a slipper! Ok I've knitted 1 large square and 3 smaller ones that tomorrow I'm going to sew together to create a slipper - and then maybe I'll spend the rest of the day knitting another one! I'm not the worlds best or fastest knitter - in fact the last time I did it was 14 years ago when I was pregnant with my son. I still have that baby cardigan sleeve somewhere! But I did something new!

I...
weeded the garden
got chased by wasps
hung out the washing
got chased by wasps
picked some food for dinner
got chased by wasps
came into the house for lunch
didn't notice the rain starting
5 mins and 6inches of rain later I ran out to pick up the electric strimmer I had left outside  I left the washing, it was as wet as it could be anyway...
made some shortbread
painted the diningroom wall
plastered part of the livingroom wall
cried a little cause I hate my house and no amount of painting or plastering is going to make it half decent. :( :( :(
went to bed early (the food I picked for dinner is still lying on the grass outside  )
came on 'ish to cheer myself up

But no, I didn't do anything new...

I managed to grind grains, beans, and legumes for bread, without a grain mill!

What I did was soak and simmer gently until everything was tender, let it cool somewhat, then pureed it in the blender, along with the cooking liquid, until it was very smooth. I then used this as the starting base for the bread, adding yeast, eggs, butter, salt, molasses, and enough flour to make a stiff dough. It ended up being a lot more than expected, I ended up needing 2 huge bowls for it to rise in. More than half I ended up dividing into appropriate amounts and froze it, but I baked 2 loaves right away.

It tastes better with salted butter, but its good.

I'm sorry I can't give you the exact recipe, but I was making it up as I went and I don't even recall measuring anything.

I finished the first half of the front of a bolero jacket (crochet) and started on the second front piece. I made dinner in the slowcooker and I bought free range eggs.

I made blaeberry jam - that was a first for me! Although I've been making jam by the barrel load for decades, I never had enough blaeberries for it...
