Green manures - thinning?

Post: # 121124Post GingerKatieSparkles »

I've sowed a couple of winter green manures - mustard and fodder radish. I went with the "broadcast thickly" approach and perhaps overdid it - I have mats of green seedlings atm. Should I thin them out to allow them to grow to a decent size (bearing in mind I just want them to look after the ground overwinter, I'm not fussed about a harvest or even really getting lots of greenery for the compost), or will they sort themselves out? Just a bit worried they'll overcompete with themselves and die out, which would rather ruin the point.

No, don't thin them ... the thicker the better !
You aren't growing them to make fine looking plants after all, you are growing them to protect the soil in the first place so a complete cover is best, and if some get smothered in the process .. so what, most will survive.
Then when you dig them in so that they rot down, again the more the merrier.
Just sit back and be satisfied on a job well done.

Marvellous :) At last, something that has actually grown as intended in my veg patch!

I've had a go at green manure this year for the first time. My broadcast was (stupidly) on a wet day so its a bit more like clumps!

There are quite a few weeds starting to come throguh too, should I try to weed the patch do you think? Or just let it get on with it and make sure I dig the whole lot in before the weeds are going to seed?
They are all fast growing annual weeds, innundated around here with them unless you weed daily...or maybe more often??!
Just Do It!
