I'm sticking it to the man.
we decided to invest in a laptop.
both james and myself wanted something with no windows tax so we could get a knobby compoopter for less cash......
so, we have one running linux and as soon as ubuntu finish their type-specific OS for the Acer AspiteOne, we'll be ubuntu'd up lol. I know Acer don't have a great track record, but hey it was nice and cheap.
much love.
(no, I do not intend to run photoshop on it)

ok mike, what I mean is as soon as the company who make ubuntu have finished their version of ubuntu made specifically for the laptop I've bought, I will be transferrinf my laptop to run on ubuntu instead of the linuxlite it's got on it as standard.

Mike, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one!
Don't worry, Mrs Flibble, we don't all have to be able to understand the secret language of compooter geeks...

Re: I'm sticking it to the man.
I'm finding it really wierd trying to get to grips with the way linux works; I've been using windows pcs for flipping years so it's hard trying to get my brain into a different mindset lol!

Did you go for the SSD or conventional hard drive?
Where did you hear that an Aspire specific version of ubuntu was being developed, have you tried the current version, 8.04, apparently you can dual boot into it so that you can give it a try without doing a full install onto your hard-drive.

Re: I'm sticking it to the man.
john: conventional drive, and i heard the ubuntu thing from my li'l bro who is on their mailing list. the reason I'm waiting is they're working out problems with the wifi hotkey at the front and until i have full control over that I wont change, not even to dualboot. it's something I use all the fricking time lol!!!
can anyone help me with installing stuff? I have found a better version of the video player which supports the codecs *this* version is missing (err, most of the most common ones actually) but I have no idea how to do things to this computer. I'm actually getting quite annoyed with it tbh...

Re: I'm sticking it to the man.
I've always had a sneaking suspicion that Bill Gates invented Linux - to make people even more dependent on windows!
My OH has installed it twice, nearly blown both his and the computer's brains out and gone hightailing back to m****soft with a passion. He's a programmer by trade and can usually make his computer do anything bar making a cup of tea.

Re: I'm sticking it to the man.
I've got a very old pc that I bunged ubuntu on, and I use it as a storage device and to share printers with other pc's in the house. On the whole I have to say that my problems have been with windows being unable to cope with ubuntu.
Ubuntu just works. Don't forget, you had to learn to use windows. You need to allow a little time to adapt. Ubuntu also has a supportive community, so someone out there will help.
I love the way you can download and install new programs for free - just to play with them.
It's worth mentioning that there are other versions of linux out there: suse, mandriva, dsl ...

Re: I'm sticking it to the man.
Totally love my Ubuntu!
I fiddle the keys, there's a bit where you can change the win-key to play/pause music or whatever that I discovered when i was learning to type on a German keyboard (I'm a language student, it makes life much easier to use keyboards native to the language I'm typing in!). Isn't there a bit where you can do that for the wifi oojamaflip?
