moon and sun question
moon and sun question
There really should be an 'ask Nev' section I reckon but maybe someone else in the southern hemisphere can answer this.
This morning (around 0700 GMT) we could see the moon and the sun, what is in the sky over NZ and Australia when us in the northern hemisphere can see both???
This has puzzled me for years... and since there is no stupid question here on 'ish I thought I would ask?

Re: moon and sun question
Well GG, can you look into the sky this evening (I guess GMT 0700, BST 0800 will be around 7pm for you???) and report back, tell us what you see... I am so curious, it is disturbing

Re: moon and sun question
That's easy. There's a small "Image Not Available" gif posted in the sky.
Re: moon and sun question
ANNOYING - I typed a long post and it got butted out 'cos Rod posted at exactly the same time.
Ah well - to cut a long story short, you're getting confused between north/south and east/west, Annpan. There IS a point when the sun is at its highest in, say Pakistan, at which you and Nev could nip out into your gardens and both see the sun - Nev in the western sky and you in the eastern sky.
But only just.
Most of the time, though, if you can see the sun and the moon, it's down to Rod's gif image for Oz.

Re: moon and sun question
I missed the sun aswell as the moon yesterday morning as I was already at work. But as I was driving to work around 6.15am I couldnt help but notice how beautiful the full moon looked. It was mesmerising.

I'm confused!
feel like I might be spinning on my axis!

Re: moon and sun question
I am not getting confused between North and south (OK, I shouldn't have used the phrase 'northern hemisphere' I should have said 'western europe' )but the question goes for any two opposite points on the globe. I understand that there are time that we can both see the moon or the sun but frequently we can see both well passed mid-day most likely in the winter I am not talking about just at sunriseMKG wrote:

I don't 'think' there is ever a time when I can see neither the moon or the sun,(cloud excepted) We have one or the other, or both. The idea of an empty sky is slightly eerie to me. Now this might be more to do with Scotland's more northerly position or something... if only I had a globe, a tennis ball, a golf ball and a few helpers I could have figured it out myself.

So really, that's the answer? There is just nothing in the sky?

Re: moon and sun question
That's right. Some evenings you can actually watch both the sun and the moon sink below the horizon within a few hours of each other.
Leaving just that rather drab gif in the sky.
