Post: # 132411Post evelyn »

Do any of you know why i have no sprouts?

I sowed my seed in april, planted out in June, i have very healthy looking 2ft plants, but absolutly not a single sprout on any of the 18 plants, and no signe of any coming.

What went wrong??? :? :? :? :?

No idea Eve, but if you've got the sprout tops growing they're much nicer than the sprouts anyway. (I loathe sprouts - only grow enough for xmas day so OH can't say I never cook any  ).

I think some varieties aren't ready till March/April, never grown them but perhaps they won't show sprouts just yet? I'm guessing

I can't remember what they are, only that they are an F1 variety, when i had planted my 18 i gave the seeds away to a friend, who then lost them on her way home so i cant compair mine to hers either.

We were soooooo looking forward to fresh sprouts on Christmas day, this is realy dissapointing as i will now have to BUY some insted.

I was looking forward to our own sprouts too, and I did make note some come at different times of year so picked a variety that sprouted Nov-Jan....but they are either completley open or microscopic! I've tried them and they are really tasty and won't go to waste but I don't think I'm going to impress anyone Christmas day so I too will have to buy some :(

I think my brother would also cringe at the amount of whitefly you ahve to extract too....and caterpillars....few slugs here and there....lets hope the rabbits don't nibble any more either...

It does depend a bit on the variety, but I would have thought you should at least see some small sprouts by now.
I grow Maximus which is the replacement for Peer Gynt, and I picked the first ones at the end of July and they are still going strong.
I also have some red ones which are just showing signs of maturing, so hopefully should carry on after Christmas.

Why yours are not showing signs of growing I have no idea. You sowed at the right time and 2' plants are ideal size for a modern F1 variety.
If your plants look healthy and showing no signs of any deficiency, I would get in touch with the seed company (if you can remember who they were) and ask their advice.

I like sprouts!

I grew them for the first time this year and am by no means an expert. However - and fortunately, before I planted out the 12 plants I got at the local produce market, I both heard and read that they need firm ground so I stomped on the freshly dug border and now have masses of sprouts on the plants.

Some are small but the plants are small - water taken by a nearby holly tree I think - and the slugs have been at most of the plants but this is an experimental year and next year they will go in a proper row in a proper bed.
