Waiting list

Post: # 12527Post FluffyMuppet »

Having ummmmed and ahhhhed about it for quite a long time I have put my name on a waiting list at my local allotment site. They didn't tell me how long the wait might be - there's about 20 people on the list ahead of me. I haven't had a look at the site yet, but they said I was welcome to go and have a look so I might do that.

I'm quite excited, but the delay won't matter too much as I'm still trying to get my garden under control and my greenhouse up. It will be nice to join in discussions about what's going on up at the lottie! 8)

IS there not another one a little further away? There was a waiting list at my nearest one, but I ended up going to another just to get one.

have you a car some on our allotment travel 3 miles or more i dont have a car but walk a mile to mine, but where i live there is probably 4 allotment sites in a mile radius.i would check how many sites there are in the area you wish to travel. and have a look at the sites and priortise them in the preference and best for you.most allotments send bills out in apriland there is a bit of turnover when some people decide to jack it in,or sadly a veteran gardener goes to the allotment in the sky!.i would go round and look at them and talk to the people on the allotment because they will be aware of people giving up there allotment.just some ideas.

There are 3 allotment sites in my town. The other 2 are quite some way away (one, certainly is too far away for me to cycle in my current not-fit state) and I have been told by a friend that the other is quite isolated and she did not feel comfortable being there on her own. I haven't seen any of them, but at the moment I am not in a rush because there is plenty still to do in the garden.

I do own a car, but would prefer to use it less, not more.

I got my allotment on Saturday! It's about 30 yards by 9 yards and currently weedy but otherwise not too bad. I spent 2 hours digging about 3 square yards on Sunday and planted onions and shallots. I also covered another section which is currently less weedy with black plastic to try and keep it that way.

I am the secretary at our allotment site and we currently have a waiting list of 10. There are 144 plots..all different sizes ,but roughly "large" and "small". The small ones are £17.75 per year and the large ones are £19.75. Rents are due on 1st January but I am just sending bills out now to those who have not paid...and if they don't pay by the end of March..without a good reason, like illness...then they will lose their plot and it will go to somebody on the waiting list.
But, we have 1 or 2 empty plots now...they are overgrown and some people don't want the work of sorting them out. If someone takes on a plot that has been very neglected then we give them their second year free.
Usually we can't get hold of people on the list so the plots tend to those people that we can get hold of...so keep pestering them, and good luck
